Judge Rules Receiver of Electric Line Must Pay Workers Living Wage

Judge Hugo Friend of Cook County Circuit Court ruled that a receiver running the Chicago and Interurban Traction Company must pay workers a fair living wage despite the line being under foreclosure. The decision, in a case brought by 90 members of Division 241, Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employers of America, held that financial condition cannot justify wage cuts and that the receiver must pay market wages for labor and necessary supplies.

Gompers Attacks Plan to Lower Child Labor Age

In Washington the senate faces efforts to reduce the child labor amendment age from 18 to 16. Samuel Gompers denounces what he calls propaganda and warns that supporters seek to mislead Congress and the public about the amendment's meaning. He explains the measure would enable future limits on child labor, not outright prohibition. He criticizes President Nicholas Murray Butler for opposing the 18 age standard and notes party caucus attempts to adjust age to 16.
