Wage Slavery Exposed in Ontario Industries

Ottawa reports reveal widespread exploitation as skilled male workers in Guelph shoe factories earn 1.60 to 2.00 a day while Tron molders earn 8 to 11 a week and girls in a felt hat plant toil 72 hours weekly at 13 cents an hour. Ice workers receive 70 cents for a 10 hour day amid harsh conditions, with aliens facing extortion and pressure to accept harsh terms.

Unions Expenses Paid by Company in NIRA Hearing

At a NIRA hearing on a proposed telephone industry code, Charles Cooper of AT&T said Bell system covers the reasonable expenses of company unions. He noted some meeting minutes reach management, and employers may pay employee travel costs, though no employees were known to have done so. Rep. Connery urged outlawing company unions under the National Industrial Recovery Act, stating any remaining form violates Congress intent and law.

New Local Molders Unions Formed in Dallas and Sandusky

Cincinnati report notes 31 new unions added to the International Molders' Union since July 1 with camps in Dallas Texas and Sandusky Ohio. A call to teach children to demand the union label and its card and button to assure union made goods.

Kentucky Operators Fight NRA Wage Scale

Louisville Kentucky. The NRA wage scale of 4.60 for a seven hour day in the Western Kentucky coal fields will be combatted in federal courts. J Van Norman attorney for the West Kentucky Coal Operators Association announced after a meeting of 60 mine owners. The operators contend the scale would be ruinous and would argue that the scale is arbitrary and confiscatory and would question the constitutional validity of government regulation of wages and hours.

Peaceful operation credited to NRA on industry relief

In Washington D C the Cotton Textile National Industrial Relation Board reports that the National Recovery Administration has brought peaceful operation to an industry once torn by conflict. Since August 2 1938 only one of 4000 complaints reached the NIRB and only six disputes led to short strikes. The AFL reviewed all cases and they are open for labor representatives to inspect.

Labor Gains North Hammersmith Seat in By Election

The Labour Party wins its fifth by election since the government took power, reclaiming North Hammersmith in the Commons. Labor candidate F R West, a school teacher, earns 14 263 votes, defeating Conservative 10 747 and Communist 614.

Bodies of German union leaders found in forest

In a forest near Dinslaken Rhineland four Duisburg trade union officials were found dead. The May 2 1933 Nazi raids on unions led to arrests seizures and bank seizure. Ruhr murder commission identified the bodies but could not determine the cause of death. An official statement warned against sensational conjecture.

Match-Chemical Workers Win Strike in Barbeton

The Match Makers' Union No. 18928 won full recognition from Diamond Match Company in Barberton Ohio, ending the Bedeaux system. Concurrently Chemical Workers' Local Union No. 19019 won a strike for improved working conditions. Both unions are affiliated with the AFL.

Increased Loom Load Brings Strike at Southern Weavers

Spartansburg South Carolina pending settlement of a strike by 300 workers at the Highland Park Manufacturing Co mill in Rock Hill. Weavers and loom fixers protested a cloth type change that increased loom load, halting weaving and later the entire mill while negotiations continue.
