Local Union No. 108 of the United Association of Plumbers and Steam Fitters walk out after the Master Plumbers refuse a 35 percent wage increase. Journeymen seek raise from 55 to 75 cents per hour, arguing rising costs and long denial of raises, while masters allegedly earn substantial hourly profits.
The Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employes of America urges members to support government war aims, avoid strikes, and exhaust all adjustment methods. The manifesto, signed by International President W. D. Mahon and the general executive board, stresses reason, tolerance, contract observance, and shared sacrifice amid rising living costs and industrial tensions.
United labor groups including the International Typographical Union, United Mine Workers, Brewery Workers International Union, Carpenters and Joiners, Bridge and Structural Iron Workers, Iron Molders, and Machinists bought Liberty Bonds totaling tens of thousands to fifty thousand dollars each. The AFL numbers nearly three million members and is active in national service.
