Railroads and Unions Reach Full Pension Agreement

Washington announces a joint pension plan after negotiations between 21 railroad labor unions and management led by George M. Harrison and J. J. Pelley. The plan, pending two congressional acts, taxes payrolls up to seven percent over twelve years, funds annuities from the treasury, and sets retirement rules including 65 with 30 years, early retirement at 60 with penalties, disability options, and survivor benefits affecting about 1.5 million workers and affiliates.

Big Mid West Packers Raise Wages Amid Union Drive Fears

In the Midwest big packers led by Swift Armour Cudahy and Wilacyn raise base pay by 9 cents an hour with a similar boost in piece rates. About 200 000 workers gain, adding 22 million dollars yearly to payroll. Hormel Morrell join the rise as a second wave in four months. International Harvester announces 5 500 000 dollars yearly gains from a 2 1/2 to 3 cent raise in late November 1936.

Belfast stenographer told to pay 2900 in weekly installments

In Belfast Northern Ireland a five dollar a week stenographer was ordered to pay 2900 in damages for injuring another woman with a bicycle. The judge set the repayment at 1 25 per week with a deadline of 1985 noting there was no justice until she could pay.
