A Hamilton Machine Tool Co strike continues with 11 imported strikebreakers leaving the plant. Machinists demand restoration to former positions per a prior firm agreement not yet fulfilled. The walkout is quiet and orderly, with workers seeking fair treatment after building the firm’s reputation for skilled work.
The A F of L executive council in Paris forwards to President Wilson and Congress a report blaming postwar conditions for unrest among workers. It urges abandoning the February 1 1920 construction project, promoting competition to finish ships and provide work, even at reduced prices, and stresses avoiding idle labor. Buy thrift stamps.
Report by the Commission on International Labor Legislation urges a broad treaty charter. It envisions eight hour days, equal pay for women, child labor limits, maternal protection, unemployment insurance, and an international labor commission to enforce rules among League of Nations members.
Boise reports indicate organized employers across the area have reduced wages from 25 cents to 26 percent daily. The private gas company also cut wages yet kept gas prices high, while unions gain momentum with two new groups and several crafts reporting increases.
Butler Aerie No. 407 members form committee led by Edw. Wiegand to organize a large citywide 4th of July celebration. Worthy President Lou J. Wittman names Edw. Wiegand chairman Carl Lehmkuhl secretary and Wm. Wilmer treasurer. Meetings set for Thursdays at 7 30 p m with high hopes for a summer revelry since the war’s end.
The national industrial conference board urges present wages to curb living costs asserting workers bear responsibility for price rises only if wages grow. It argues employers use wage boosts to push prices higher and deflect blame from firms. Washington reports: the national war labor board grants Western Drop Forge workers a 10 percent wage increase and orders reinstatement with back pay for a discharged employee.
