The A F of L endorsed a program to end contract prison labor in the United States. It promotes a states use system to replace contracts, build efficient prison industries, and rehabilitate prisoners with wages paid to dependents or the prisoner.
New York credit expert John L. C. Redmond told the Kiwanis Club that men in the city have secured goods totaling about 100000 on false pretenses. He warned the extreme penalty for such fraud is a six months sentence and urged federal courts to overhaul bankruptcy law to wipe out 90 percent of evils and break up the bankruptcy ring in 24 hours.
Chicago Federation of Labor leaders accuse the state's attorney and the manufacturers' lawyer of coordinating raids on union officials. Oscar F Nelson notes Dudley Taylor directed investigations against upholsterers while promising no legal wrongdoing. Unionists in meat, paint, and poster trades report similar actions and warn members to verify who questions them.
The International Labor News Service reports the National Founders' Association-backed American motion picture corporation spends heavily on anti union propaganda. Barr defends purposes as innocent while critics doubt sincerity and fear future anti union films. The venture reportedly loses a million dollars annually and shows no profitable returns yet.
Baltimore Federation of Labor rejects Secretary of Labor Davis’s plan for immigrant registration. The central body warns it would bring a passport system, enable employer spying, create a blacklist, oppress workers and risk corruption and demoralization.
Congressman Watkins cites court records showing profits up to 36 327 percent as evidence for an excess-profits tax. He notes Lever Act failures and fines repaid in trials, naming chemical, iron, and steel firms with high margins to illustrate profiteering and justify taxation.
John P. Frey, editor of the Molders Journal, says the entire Local Union No. 357 membership in Montpelier Ind. is innocent of the hotel explosion that damaged a strike-housing hotel on November 24. He cites evidence pointing to outsiders and notes the bond demand near a quarter million dollars keeps the imprisoned men jailed until trial.
Louise Wallinger confessed in Judge Nott s court that he was paid 50 dollars weekly to set fires in laundry buildings not part of the Wet Wash Laundrymen s Association. He said a 40 dollar bonus was paid for a particularly good job. Some fires occurred in tenements housing many families but no lives were lost. Wallinger and others pleaded guilty to arson in the third degree and await sentencing. they are said to testify against association officers whose trial will follow.
The Wart Baking Company merges with the Ward Baking Corporation forming a new firm. Wart had fought the Bakery Workers Union for months to sustain an anti union shop. The union vows to resist the anti union campaign in the merged enterprise.
