In New York the shirt trade faces a price cutting onslaught as 136,000 shirts were dumped in one day amid NRA decision fallout. Sweatshops and bootlegged goods flood chain stores, driving down quality shirts to rock-bottom prices and threatening legitimate makers and industry stability.
Over 2,000 street car motormen conductors and bus operators in Washington seek a new contract with Capital Transit Company. The proposal calls for an eight hour day six day week with raises from 49 to 83 cents per hour over the first year, a one man versus two man pay premium, a five day shopmen schedule with time and a half for overtime, and barnmen eight hours six days with a 30 cent raise. An arbitration board chaired by Frank W. Swacker will hear the dispute.
Rockford I. AFLNS organized labor welcomed the Bartenders Union affiliated with the Hotel and Restaurant Employes' International League of America. The new group began with 63 members. Josh Brady, a veteran labor figure, serves as president. this is Rockford's first bartender union since 1912 prohibition.
The Warren Pennsylvania Western Union office faced a senate lobby probe over 1300 telegrams opposing the Wheeler Rayburn bill. Key staff were fired or suspended after officials allegedly authorized unsigned messages from city directory names. Journalistic findings accuse high U S executives of orchestrating anti union activity and pressuring employees to assist.
A. P. of La. News Service reports Mayor La Guardia will not permit taxi rates to fall from 35 cents for the first mile and 20 cents per mile thereafter without a court order. The board of aldermen sets rates, while a New York Supreme Court suit seeks approval for low rate meters. The mayor cites driver wages and eight hour days as prerequisites before any reduction. He warns lower rates now won't help drivers or passenger safety or business.
The Teamaters and Chauffeurs Union of Battle Creek secured higher wages in a contract with City Tee & Mold Storage Co. The agreement gives $4.20 per hour and a 4-hour week for wagon drivers, with overtime pay for excess hours. Wages for station men vary by tonnage sold.
