Hamilton Lodge of Machinists reports strong turnout and active shop committees with two strikes ongoing. Nearly two thousand machinists expected in Labor Day parade with marshals to lead the line. A Cincinnati class of 2463 was initiated into the Machinists Union, the largest ever in one session.
Omaha Bricklayers' union No. 1 approves a new rate of 1 dollar per hour. Kansas City already uses this scale since Feb 15, St. Joseph since Jan 1, Denver since July 15, 1918, and Alouk City adopts the same. Des Moines strike settled with terms unavailable. Carpenters' union No. 651 in Jackson Michigan sets June 1 wages at 70 cents and a 44 hour week, instituting a permanent Saturday half holiday with smooth transition.
Samuel Gompers and two top AFL officials lead the fifth American labor mission to Europe aboard the Mauretania to attend the Amsterdam congress on July 25. They will push for a new international federation of labor and oppose Bolshevism while seeking to establish a European headquarters away from Berlin. The trip follows debates on labor’s stance for Washington’s planned international labor congress. The voyage begins after Atlantic City convention approval. In Lynn Massachusetts GE installs a 48 hour week replacing 50 hours for many workers.
City council passed an ordinance increasing wages from the superintendent level to the lowest paid in the public service department. The boost averages 44 cents per hour about 21 dollars weekly, with calls to further raise the lowest paid in the next budget. The piece asserts workers need living wages amid high living costs and urges targeted increases instead of broader cuts.
