Washington reports dividends for the first half of the year hit a new high despite unemployment and falling wages. Utility dividends stay steady amid regulation. Kresge and Grant chains show divergent business results while overall dividends rise and defaults fall in June but remain high overall.
Washington D C reports a large scale union label drive contest by the Trades Union League of Cincinnati and vicinity with label leagues in Hamilton Kenton and Campbell counties Ohio. Cash and merchandise prizes totaling 1000 will be awarded for points from purchasing union labeled products. The contest closes October 1 with a 100 gold prize to the organization with the most points and a 300 gold prize for the top individual. Special prizes exist for points from Clown cigarettes and union label bread and cake. Miss Lee Boettger is treasurer and Jacob Lieb secretary.
A new automatic insurance selling machine appears at bixy German railway stations. Travelers insure against accidents by inserting a small amount in pfennigs and receive a stamped ticket showing the policy details. The device also imprints the purchaser’s thumb to deter fraud. Policies typically last one or two days.
Attorney General Mitchell rules military training optional at land grant colleges upheld by Interior Secretary Wilbur. For 68 years most schools treated it as compulsory, but Wisconsin in 1928 made it optional with Interior approval of federal funds.
Union growth shown at the South Carolina Federation of Labor convention with 125 delegates. The movement reports more than 110 local unions, new textile councils, and a push for a state council, plus plans for a workmen's compensation bill and increased organizing in Alabama and Mississippi.
Governor Roosevelt of New York told a conference in Salt Lake City that 90 percent of unemployment stems from workers’ fault. He proposed self supporting unemployment insurance funded by treasuries, employers, and workers, and urged broader old age insurance. He attacked officials and financiers for distorting unemployment facts.
Washington Senate debates on the yellow dog contract linked to Judge Parker are printed as a pamphlet by the A F of TL. President Green calls it a valuable tool for upcoming campaigns and notes the discussions provided rich legal information. Copies are available by subscription.
National Industrial Conference Board reports a 1927 survey of 315 plans with only four discontinued by 150 surveyed. Stock sold to employees mostly below market price and few losses occurred in the crash. Many plans kept intact and stock held by a small group of workers.
Denver reports that highway contractors building state and county roads forced workers to put in ten to twelve hour days in violation of the eight hour law. The Colorado Federation of Labor filed protests with the state industrial commission.
Washington says the July Monthly Survey of Business from the American Federation of Labor notes several months of dull business in 1930. It cites $146 million more in railroad construction funding and $495 million more for public utilities, but warns unemployment remains high and living standards fall as prices drop mainly for manufacturers.
The piece reports increased Russian coal imports to Canada and new communist activity in western Canadian coal fields and Nova Scotia. Agitators urge miners to join the Workers' United League of Canada, directed from Moscow via the Comintern. Authorities reportedly plan 5,000,000 tons of coal shipped annually to Canada, provoking miners who claim Moscow engineers labor unrest to aid Soviet market goals.
