President Roosevelt signs the railroad pension bill and announces a 2 percent wage restoration, boosting employment and purchasing power for over a million railroad workers. The plan funds retirement for 100,000 this year and adds about 4 million dollars monthly in wages, with further increments set for January and April.
The Philadelphia Federal Reserve reports Pennsylvania factory employment fell a fractional amount from April to May while total wages rose about 5 percent. Delaware factories saw employment dip under 1 percent and payrolls and operating time down over 1 percent in the same period.
Alan C. L. Richardson, conciliator for the U S Department of Labor, announced a settlement between the metal miners unions and the Tennessee Coal Iron and Railway Co ending a two month strike by 2 500 workers who walked out May 4 over wages and conditions. The agreement provides wage gains from 3 to 5 cents per hour and reclassification to reduce pay differentials as talks continue with 2 000 more miners from three other firms. Four men were killed and many injured during the dispute. National Guardsmen were on duty.
The New York Court of Appeals, in a 5 to 2 decision, ruled unions have no right to peacefully picket distribution points of a troubled manufacturer. The ruling affirmed lower court injunctions restraining unions from picketing groceries selling the company’s products, finding it amounted to an illegal secondary boycott.
Cleveland Ohio July 1 over four million dollars monthly wage increase becomes effective for over one million railroad workers America wide in a 2 percent restoration under an April 26 agreement. A further 2 percent is due January 1 and 5 percent more on April 1 1935 to complete the 10 percent cut reversal.
The Federal Council of Churches issues a statement urging full recognition of collective bargaining as essential to justice. It cites tension between labor and management, calls for workers to choose representatives freely, and argues for rights and democratic progress through broad organization and fair negotiation.
May per capita weekly earnings of factory workers dipped 0.1 percent from April, though remain higher than any month since Oct 1981 and 20 percent above May 1933. Weekly earnings averaged $19.81 with 1 of 90 industries showing gains. 89 plants showed decreases. Dongolia Box Co. ordered to surrender Blue Eagle for wage and hours violations under the lumber and timber products code.
State troopers constables and county detectives guarded workers who strung barbed wire around Seabrook Farms packing plant in Bridgeton New Jersey as a precaution against attacks by 400 striking employees. Gov. Moore ordered the protection after clashes between loyal workers strikebreakers and strikers left several injured. Courtney Seabrook, son of the owner, was later arrested on a charge of atrocious assault and battery.
Gulfport Mississippi workers reach settlement ending a longshoremen strike. Wages set at 60 cents per hour from 7 am to 4 pm, 75 cents per hour 4 pm to 7 am, and 90 cents for overtime beyond eight hours, replacing the former 50 cent and 60 cent rates.
A 1400 worker strike at La Crosse Rubber Mills ended after an agreement ratified by company executives and United Rubber Workers Federal Union officers. The pact includes a clause barring statements that could be seen as detrimental to the union.
Waldensian Hosiery Mill in Waldese North Carolina forced workers to sign a two page yellow dog contract to regain their jobs after a twelve week shutdown following union organization. R O Huffman president of the Southern Hosiery Manufacturers Association is a major Walden mill stockholder and the US Department of Labor is investigating the case as part of a broader campaign against unions.
Sheltered workshops may place NRA labels and display NRA insignia under an order by National Recovery Administrator Johnson. The national sheltered workshop committee may print insignia for workshops signing a pledge of cooperation and fair competition. The NRA will ratify or disapprove each workshop's status as a sheltered workshop.
A two day conference by the hosiery code authority urged increases in minimum wage rates, cutting shifts from 40 to 45 hours per week, and an early two week factory shutdown to curb production. It also called for control over new machinery and review of open price provisions and machine limits for operators in men's half hose and women's seamless lines.
Foundry workers at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria Illinois began a strike seeking union recognition and a standardized wage scale. The walkout involves members of the International Brotherhood of Foundry Employees and aims to pressure management for labor terms.
