The Brotherhood of Stationary Firemen met in regular session with record attendance. They discussed dissatisfaction over city wage increases for firemen oilers and helpers at the city electric light and water plant and urged the city council to fulfill original agreed demands. An International representative is expected Monday. New members were initiated.
Herbert Weisbrodt known as Skimmer, from Richmond Indiana, was severely wounded in France on May 29 after landing in Hyland May 4 and arriving in France May 8. He sailed with the Richmond contingent to Camp Sherman March 29 and is noted for activity in the Niles Tool Works molders strike last summer.
Delegates at St Paul heard that misinformation spreads when official records are scarce. The report from the AFL Mission to Great Britain and France urges two abroad representatives during the war and a trip by President Gompers to Europe at the earliest moment.
The International Typographical Union at Indianapolis released a report noting 4081 journeymen and 656 apprentices or seven percent of the membership were in U S and Canadian armed forces as of June 15 1918 with seventy five killed or died in service. Mortuary benefits totaled 22550 for families while Liberty Bonds purchases reached 90000 across three loans and 3000000 pledged by subordinate groups. Other aid included 354000 to 1500 old age pensioners and 67600 for Union Printers Home Colorado Springs. strike benefits were only 1257 despite high overall benefits.
The report stresses wartime intercommunication gaps among Allied trade unions and urges the American Federation of Labor to maintain direct representatives in Europe to improve contact with developments abroad and inform leaders about German workers and allied concerns.
