Western Maryland shop unions grow under AFL federation

In Hagerstown Maryland AFL shopcraft unions reported remarkable progress expanding membership on Western Maryland. At a 40 delegate meeting to establish a Federation reports showed 85 percent of shopmen already union members and leaders predicted rapid growth toward 100 percent. Louis Bush was elected president of the Federation with Laven Bankert as secretary treasurer and Samuel Connelly as vice president.

Produce Workers Draft Eight-State Agreement

A proposed eight-state contract for uniform wages and conditions for Teamsters and Meat Cutters unionized produce workers was drafted at a Des Moines conference. It covers Minnesota North and South Dakota Iowa Nebraska Wisconsin Missouri and Kansas with 11 cent raise, starting wages of 45 cents for women and 75 cents for men, union shop, eight hour day, overtime time and a half, double time on Sundays and holidays, no morning or afternoon rest periods, one week vacation after one year and two weeks after three years, and sick and accident benefits.
