Governor Roosevelt urges New York labor reforms including an eight hour day for women and children, a fair wage board, broader workers compensation, and jury trial rights for injunctive disputes. He backs popular amendment of the state constitution and calls for extending workers pay days to all workers.
Washington The Supreme Court reversed former Interior Secretary Fall, clearing a path to restore $10,000,000 from Standard Oil California. The decision concerns California oil lands transferred for school use, where mineral status would have halted state ownership. The Interior Department’s jurisdiction is noted amid calls for Senate inquiry into the deal praised as undervalued.
The enlarged executive of the Communist Party of Canada denounces the previous policy and calls for Canadian independence to rally workers against the bourgeoisie and imperialism. Moscow influence is cited as decisive while the earlier approach favored constitutional methods and cooperation with Labor to achieve independence.
Andrew Furuseth of the International Seamen's Union argues in American Federationist that Section 4 of the Sherman anti trust law grants equity courts ancient monarch and tribune powers to set up one man government while Section 1 declares illegal every contract combination in trust or restraint.
Denver firm reaches a three year agreement with United Garment Workers Local 294. About 350 workers have applied for union membership as the firm plans to hire up to 1,000 by July 1. The contract includes a 44 hour week, safety provisions, dispute adjustment via firm and employer representatives with an impartial arbitrator, a wage boost, and union label usage.
The International Typographical Union denied reports it planned a bond issue to fund a newspaper run by Albany printers on strike. President Howard said the union could finance such a paper without bonds, citing available funds and offers of aid from New York and Boston locals. He described Albany’s dispute as a matter of principle over a 44 hour week and wage increases and arbitration.
William C Adamson former Georgia congressman who sponsored the Adamson eight hour rail act died of pneumonia in a New York hospital. The measure rushed through Congress and signed by President Wilson faced injunctions and court review before upholding eight hour day and overtime provisions. Adamson, once chairman of the House Interstate Commerce Committee, resigned from Congress in 1917 and was later named to the United States Customs Court.
