Washington reports say unemployment rose from October to November and again in December. AFL President William Green blames industry for slow job creation, noting 22.8 percent unemployment in December and over 580000 factory layoffs from October to November.
Since October 24 the Regional Labor Board disposed of 171 industrial disputes affecting 21 087 workers. The board settled 143 strikes and averted 22 through amicable adjustment. Arbitration settled six disputes and 552 workers were reinstated after union activity discrimination charges.
Chicago reports a Railway Labor Executives' Association meeting backing a six hour day plus full crew and train limit bills. Whitney cites 1920 onward rail unemployment exceeding 800,000, urging shorter hours with full pay to curb joblessness and aid morale.
William Green president of the American Federation of Labor invites national and international unions affiliated with the AFL to a conference with the federation's executive council in Washington on January 24 1934 at 10 am. The meeting aims to discuss organizing the unorganized and workers in mass production industries following 1932 convention actions. The session will take place in the AFL Building council chamber.
In Brighton and Hove, over 300 of 462 Tillings bus service employees spoiled ballots in a vote aimed at a wage reduction ballot imposed by company officials. The action marked a strong rebuke by workers against management.
In Scranton and nearby communities 146 teachers threaten to join a strike already declared by 30 teachers. They demand back salaries and warn schools will close until pay is issued, leaving over 4,000 students temporarily out of class.
Alexander F. Whitney of the Railway Labor Executives Association says twenty one unions will push a six hour day for railroad employees with no pay cut. He cites 300000 displaced by tech changes and 500000 laid off in the current downturn, warning 600000 unemployed rail workers need shorter hours to keep jobs.
The national recovery administration withdraws the Blue Eagle from J J Martian Company furniture movers of West Roxbury Massachusetts after discharge of employees for union affiliation and firm statements opposing unions. Local 82 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters filed charges and the firm failed to adjust after warnings.
