Etta V. Leighton of the National Security League travels to Miami to warn the South of communist influence in labor circles and schools. She cites Europe’s ideas, urges adherence to constitutional liberty, and promotes civic education courses.
International Labor News Service reports responses from U S senators to a telegram urging a Senate investigation of conditions in the bituminous coal fields of Pennsylvania Ohio and West Virginia. Senator James Couzens says he will vote for the bill. Senator Guy D Goff says he will give the views serious consideration. Senator Burton K Wheeler also comments.
Forty thousand textile workers in New England face a 10 percent wage cut amid winter, with United Textile Workers leader Thomas F. McMahon citing mills across Maine New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The cuts come mainly from nonunion or minimally organized plants, while strong U T W centers escape the effect. Union sentiment stiffens as wage reductions follow years of low pay in Fall River and Lewiston with some mills still posting large dividends.
New York city board of health requires landlords to heat rental units to 68 degrees from 6 am to 10 pm when street temperature falls to 55 degrees or lower. Health Commissioner Harris cites 600,000 children under five and over 100,000 seniors as vulnerable in winter.
Washington reports Surgeon General Cumming warns against vaccination shields or dressings during or after smallpox vaccination. He notes dressings can create wound conditions that foster lockjaw, with the vaccinated area typicaly forming a dry scab. An antiseptic dressing is advised if an open sore appears. Multiple gauze layers pinned inside a loose sleeve may be suitable.
Chicago trade union officials read a Chicago Commerce story praising organized labor. The report quotes A. S. Holoway of Krenn & Dato Construction noting Chicago tunnel workers handling immense gravels and two million gallons a day, attracting national attention. editors and contractors call them world famous for tough underground work.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt challenges the Federation of Democratic Women over its claim to speak for women in the party. She questions its numbers and critiques a circular urging Democrats in Congress to oppose the U S Children's Bureau and abolish it. Roosevelt asserts no such organization can represent all party women.
Assemblyman Louis Lefkowitz in Albany filed a bill aiming to void contracts prohibiting union membership. The measure declares such clauses against public policy and unenforceable if either party agrees not to join or stay in a labor union.
