Organized labor readies Hamiltons twenty sixth annual Labor Day celebration. Thousands expected in the largest parade yet with machinists and carpenters leading lines at Butler County Fairgrounds. The parade forms 9 am with four divisions and a grand fireworks finale.
The British government reports 1,442,000 women in the workforce in January 1918, with about 36 percent of nonmunitions government employees and nearly three-quarters of all women in industry aiding the war program, across unions such as the Typographical and Carpenters, amid wartime labor shifts. The item notes women filling depleted industrial ranks amid broad union terms.
The Committee In Charge Of The Big Labor Day Celebration includes A E Eggleston as chairman with a full roster from every local union. Members listed span Brewers to Textile Workers and Stationary Engineers. secretary is Mrs Magdalen Nau and treasurer Henry Betacher.
Denver dispatch reports a full local of the International Union of Mill Mine and Smelter Workers has joined the Twenty seventh Mining Engineers corps in the United States Army. With 130 members, the charter was issued by President Charles H. Moyer and Secretary Ernest Mills. At Camp Meade they will serve overseas as soldiers with union membership. Also noted is a Columbus Georgia bulletin that street car men have organized despite company opposition.
Former Premier Crawford Vaughan told Seattle union men that 150000 Australian troops were union members and 46000 had died. He praised the American Federation of Labor and US democracy, urging American workers to support Allied democracy in the crisis. He noted eight percent of Australia's population enlisted and Australian labor backs the Allied cause.
