Senate Votes To Increase Work Week For Women And Minorities
Ohio Senate approved Substitute Bill No. 177 by 28 to 6 with five absent, widening exemptions to the eight hour day for women and minors in several industries including hotels, laundries, bakeries, canneries, and executive clerical work. NLRB Chair Opposes Labor Amendments in Senate Hearing
Washington, D. C. J Warren Madden chairman of the NLRB testified for three days on proposed amendments to the National Labor Relations Act. He opposed most proposals, calling Barker amendments class legislation aimed at emasculating the act. He favored AFL drawn Walsh changes but cited labor division irritations. He denied bias toward CIO, noting 74 cases pitting AFL against CIO with 35 AFL wins, 30 CIO wins, others mixed. He favored a nationwide employer poll showing AFL preference and discussed unfair labor practices against urging workers to join AFL. He described 15 AFL collusive contracts invalidated and one CIO contract. He noted employers prefer AFL but offered no reason.
