Ohio Governor Endorses Vacation Thrift Contest for Schools

Governor Cox endorses the Vacation Thrift contest run by the Ohio War Savings Division inviting schools to devote May 1 to thrift exercises with parents present. The program offers a $1000 maturity War Savings prize and 26 capital prizes. winners visit Columbus to receive awards from the Governor. The plan aims to teach thrift and self control while boosting War Savings participation.

Carpenters Union Reports Hiring and Violations

Carpenters Local 637 met in Trades Council hall, reporting plentiful work but a carpenters shortage. John King violated union agreement and was ordered to explain, failing which the agreement was voided and non union workers used. Jean Arent signed with the union and is building thirteen Prospect Hill houses with union personnel. Swain Carson was re elected business agent and says boom ahead.

War Labor Conspiracy Bill Get Hushed Conferees Action

A Senate battle over the sabotage act ends with conferees striking both the Cannon and Lunn amendments. The bill now targets only actions intended to hamper war prosecution, while labor rights to quit and seek better conditions are protected by the final agreement. Insurance Firms Lose Stand in Ohio Workmen Comp Case

In Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge Evans dissolved the injunction against the Industrial Commission after ruling last General Assembly provisions on self insureds under the Workmen's Compensation Act constitutional. The decision advances efforts to remove insurers from Ohio's Workmen's Compensation field. The case moves to the Court of Appeals after a 10 day stay allowed to file a plea in error. The Industrial Commission order set for January 15, 1918 remains unenforceable pending appeal.

Service Flag Dedication By Eagles

Sunday May Sth service flag dedication by Butler Aerie will feature a large outdoor event in Ludlow Park. Congressman Gard will travel from Washington, Walton Bowers among speakers, with a 500 child chorus and brass band directed by Prof Will H Lebo. A brief Eagles parade aims to be the city’s biggest patriotic gathering inviting all to attend.
