Legislature Acts On Measures Of Interest To Labor

Ohio labor news reports last week saw the Ninety-Third General Assembly pass several measures. The House approved a five member wage and hour study committee and a half mill municipal band tax, plus a constitutional amendment on a state board of education. Also: unemployment tax exemption for salaries over 8000 and Senate action on police and fire seniority rights. Senate Bill 177 on women hours faces further debate amid labor opposition.

U S Court Ups A F O L Warns Board In Decisions

In Chicago Judge Otto Kerner voided the National Labor Relations Board action against Jefferson Electric Co of Bellwood Illinois. The NLRB had found unfair labor practices due to alleged aid to an AFL CIO union and ordered reinstatement of three employees. The court ruled the company stayed neutral and urged the board to require substantial evidence before siding.

Striking Printers Win Pay Increase in Compromise

A two day strike by union printers at the News-Press and Gazette in St. Joseph Missouri ended with a compromise. Printers sought about six percent raise while the papers offered two percent. the agreement provides about a three percent increase.

Court Holds NLRB Findings Based on Suspicion

The Fifth Circuit overturned an NLRB order on Waterman Steamship crews denied passes to two unions. It ruled the board’s findings were based on suspicion, not evidence, in the case arising from crew dismissals during drydock in Mobile, Alabama.

Senate approves WPA relief fund amid debate

The Senate approved a 100 million dollar addition to WPA relief, defeating Senator Pepper’s bid for 50 million more by 49 to 28. Liberal labor allies backed the extra money, while most Republicans except La Follette opposed it.

House Extends F H A Life Two Years And Raises Insured Homes

The House passed a bill to extend the Federal Housing Administration life for two years and increase insured housing from 3 to 4 billion dollars. An amendment by Congressman Cochrane to curb land value boosts was adopted 199 to 142, a largely bipartisan vote.
