Office workers seek AFL affiliation after CIO split

The United Office and Professional Workers of America announces overtures from CIO locals in 12 cities including Buffalo Bridgeport New Haven Newark Philadelphia Cleveland Chicago Los Angeles and St Louis to join the AFL. NYC Local No 16 UOPWA voted to seek AFL affiliation with about 200 to 500 members pushing for reaffiliation.

Ohio Supreme Court Backs Regional Claims Boards

In a four to three ruling the Ohio Supreme Court upholds the act creating four regional claims boards of the Industrial Commission. The decision reverses a Franklin County appeals court ruling and allows workers or their estates to sue employers for damages in occupational disease cases not covered by workers compensation. The case involves Suzie Triff administratrix and William Smith with remands to local courts for retrial.

Lumber Man Predicts Big Building Increase

James G. McNary president of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association predicts a surge in building and improvement in the lumber market. He spoke at the Southern Pine Association annual convention saying trends look better and that a stronger home building and construction period is likely unless foreign developments dampen activity. He urged lumbermen to work to recover markets lost to competition.

Lumber Industry Acknowledges Forest Conservation Problems

A speaker urged substitute materials and reform of lumber distribution while arguing forest conservation is a national social and economic problem for the entire lumber industry. He said lumbermen now recognize the need to care for forests to ensure long term supply and health of the sector.

Labor Committee Kills Union Incorporation Bill in Ohio

Ohio House Labor Committee indefinitely postponed hearings on a measure to incorporate labor unions after noting no proponents appeared. Rep Farnsworth said he acted on discussions with business groups, but with no witnesses the vote to kill the bill passed. The committee then resumed hearings on two other bills requested by the State Union Allied Printing Trades.
