Hosiery Workers Demand Clean-Up of Mississippi Valley

Davie editor of Amalgamated Journal dies after stroke

Ben J. Davie long time editor of the Amalgamated Journal and trusted Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers figure died of a stroke at Maverick Street Dormont Pa. He led the labor paper to prominence and served as trustee and assistant president. born April 24 1861 in Yale his career spanned iron and steel work from 1876.

Canada Increases Labor Camp Wages

Ottawa reports the government raised monthly wages for single men in 10 forced labor camps from 5 to 15 dollars and plans to close all camps by July 1. Railways will employ 10,000 on deferred maintenance, others build roads in northern Quebec and Ontario, with farm placements subsidized.

Refinery Ordered to Bargain With Union Across Plant

The National Labor Relations Board ordered Atlantic Refining Co to meet with the Oil Field Gas Well and Refinery Workers union at the Brunswick Georgia plant to negotiate on wages hours and working conditions. The board said collective bargaining means negotiating as a group through representatives and not handling only individual grievances. More than 100 of 123 employees were union members yet the company refused to negotiate, and the board ordered an election to determine employee representation at Belmont Stamping Enameling Co in New Philadelphia Ohio. The NLRB also ordered Harbor Boatbuilding Co to bargain with the Ship Carpenters Caulkers and Joiners Union and certified Branch 69 of the American Federation of Hosiery Workers for John Blood & Co in Boyertown Pa following a secret election. Since inception the board logged 65 charges affecting 5 364 workers, closing 56 cases covering 7 227 workers with 32 settlements for 4 964 employers.
