Councils Reject New Assessment Basis in South Australia

Minor collisions in Burra area Friday night

On Friday night November 13 a light collision occurred when Mr A Woodman of Burra backed a truck from Welsh Place and hit a Burra Passenger Bus. A second incident near Odd Fellows Hall Burra North involved cars driven by Mr Robert Cooke and Mr Ray Bevan with only slight damage.

New Police Officer Set to Lead Burra North Station

Bet J U McInerney is named incoming Officer in Charge of Burra North Police Station and will arrive at the new station in December. McInerney succeeds Constable Wilson who left the force in June this year.

Accident Misadventure Near Burra Causes Confusion

Reported in a local bulletin a vehicle driven by Mr Jack Kemp and companions overturned about 45 miles from Burra on the way to Adelaide after hitting loose gravel. All occupants escaped with minor injuries and continued, misdirected by a police officer who misidentified their location as Burma near Bapunds.

Aberdeen Croquet Season Opens

The Aberdeen Croquet Club opened its 1958-54 season with Mrs A. B. Riggs introducing Mayor Mrs W. Carpenter who declared the season open. Mrs Bartholomeius Bit struck the first bell, and votes of thanks were given to Mrs Carpenter and Mrs Bartholomeus by Mrs Steer. Varied club members joined playing, with afternoon tea served and best wishes given to birthday celebrant Mrs Bara.

Remembrance Day Observed in Burra

On November 1 Burra held Remembrance Day with a short ceremony at the War Memorial base. Members of the RGL and Air Force Association gathered under Burra Sub-Branch President H Griffen. Pastor Ashdown delivered the address and wreaths were laid by H Griffen Young Dollman and Mayor W Carpenter as the last post and Reveille sounded.

Playground equipment purchase moves forward in town

At the Buysa Progress Association November meeting the first lot of playground equipment was approved up to £110. Plans include olive top swings a log swing a double see saw and two self propelled swings with foot rests. Also discussed were extending the playground area introducing a fenced pathway and by law limiting usage to 14 years. Cement donations were pledged by local firms and a committee was formed to plan the site. Christmas Pageant preparations continue with a Children Procession a concert and a ride by Mr James awaiting improvements for better turnout.

Horse Drowned While Pulling Van Near Redeitfe Station

Mr Laure Pornage of Burra lost a horse while rounding up sheep. The horse, pulling a loaded van, slipped into a dam as it reached the water. The vessel sank, breaking a chest on the van and scattering groceries wireless and fencing coil. some items not recovered. The horse and wagon were later removed with help from a nearby station and the shaft repaired.

Mt Bryan ML Bryan hosts an auction sale of miscellaneous articles next Saturday. Horace A Edwards secretary says locals have donated sheep fire wood hay poultry furniture and other items to support church trust funds.

Four munaree acres of freehold land at Porter Burrs sold for 37 pounds per acre. Buyers were Messrs T H Goodridge & Co. Ltd and associates. A 5B acre homestead block at Ballett passed in at 29 pounds per acre and may sell by primate treaty. Perpetual lease adjacent to the Diooloo railway siding drew 14 pounds per acre, not accepted but likely to be negotiated.
