Anzac Day Service Held in Burra Amid Remembrance

Well attended Anzac ceremony in Burra with 69 marchers. Ex Navy band led parade, flag bearers carried Australis flag and Air Force plug. Ministers directed service noting fallen in World Wars I II Korea and Vietnam fields. Wreaths laid by officials and community groups. evening service at St Mary’s Church.

Rental For Oval Football Club Negotiated Revenue

Messrs Murphy and Morrison attended a Town Council meeting to discuss Memorial Oval rental for the football season. Council members noted past income of 2 pounds 2 shillings per match. water costs were higher at 7 shillings 4 pence, leading to a shortfall. Delegates offered 24 pounds 14 shillings 0 pence rental for the forthcoming season on a motion by Drs Bernhardh and White.

Women Fire Auxiliary and CWA Endorse Burra Branch Link

Meeting chaired by Mrs H L Biggs with several attendees discussed endorsing a general meeting. They recommended the Burra Branch of the Epee Auxiliary be coordinated with the Burra Branch CWA and separate bank accounts for standing funds. Apologies were read from several members.

The January to March 1953 period is remembered as unusually dry with only 58 points of rain. Optimists see time to recover while pessimists warn of a tough season. Utility capsizes near Mt Bryan. driver survives crash

On Friday afternoon William C D Connors of Mannands Station via Yun ta escaped serious injury when his Plymouth Utility skidded on gravel near Mt Bryan. The vehicle, heavily laden, crashed through a railway fence, capsized, and left the road narrowly missing a car driven by Michael Gebhard. Connors and his two sheep dogs were rescued by passing motorists. the vehicle was badly crushed.

Failed To Stop After Accident On Friday Evening

On Friday around 4 p m unknown drivers in a cream colored utility vehicle failed to stop after hitting six guide posts near the White Host Garage corner on the Barra Mt Bryan Road in Barra North. The vehicle fled down a two foot embankment and witnesses saw the incident as Burra and Burra North Police investigate.

Campers Re union Gathering Promotes Faith and Fellowship

Enthusiastic group of campers met in Red Ruth Sunday School room for a reunion at Clare show grounds. About 36 young people from Eydulena Fallett and St Bry an with ministers Jave RD Vanser and G Armstrong attended. From Burra came Alan Baulderstone and two Methodist ministers. Tea included jokers and whiskers, with Margaret Jeffries arranging social moments. A sketch by visiting ministers led to playful prayers for a camel, which yielded three asses. Rev Armstrong and Vanser supervised, with a devotional by Graham Nicholls on Foundations referencing the parable of the house built on rock. Supper wrapped a hopeful gathering as plans for next year at Clare were announced inviting more youth.

Car crash over Bon Accord Bridge near Burra North

A Chevrolet sedan left the road and plunged over the Bon Accord Bridge at Burra North on Sunday morning. The driver Mr Thomas King of Parkside and a passenger escaped with shock and minor injuries. Vehicle damage about £300. A prior crash at the same bend occurred December 1951, with a Hudrion Sedan through the railing into the creek bed. all four occupants survived.

Successful Year At Gum Creek School

The Gum Creek School commemorates a productive year with the School Committee and Mothers' Club reporting achievements. They completed improvements, bought sports gear and equipment, and funded trees concerts and a yard project. Officers were reelected for another term as 1958 promises further welfare support.

Home Made Cannon Accident Injures Boy

A 13 year old boy Lindsay Auld and an unnamed companion attempted a gunpowder experiment using a copper tube mortar. They placed a fuse and marble in the device which exploded when picked up, injuring Lindsay’s arm and face.
