Burnet County Bulletin (Newspaper) - September 15, 1977, Burnet, Texas Buchanan situation no better discord continues Between opposing acc Mfd factions by Joan Puckett Buchanan dam the Quot situation Quot with the opposing factions in the Buchanan Community Center Volunteer fire department inc., is Quot no better than it was seven months ago Quot one of the new acc Mfd trustees told the bulletin this week. The Board was scheduled to meet at 7 30 . Last night wednesday sept. 14 a with both sides of the faction apparently viewing the meeting in different ways. In a statement signed by Board chairman Inez Lewis and delivered to the bulletin monday mrs. Lewis said Quot the Community is being led to a state of confusion by a second fire in an interview later mrs. Lewis said the statement was drafted by her and three other members of the Board because she was Quot unable to reach the other Board the Board of trustees Quot has remained silent until now and has done All in their Power to keep Harmony in the Community Quot said the official statement. Buchanan dam residents who during the last several months have experienced discord in their Community Center and Volunteer fire department have apparently not seen the end of their problems. Quot but due to the continuing problems caused by a few dissidents who have failed to keep their Side of a signed agreement Quot she says Quot the time has come for you the Public to understand what is going Quot another fire department has been chartered which is not a part of the original corporation. Monies have been and Are being solicited for its Benefit Quot mrs. Lewis says. The new fire department is not a part of the original chartered acc Mfd inc. It has no fire fighting equipment or building adds mrs. Lewis through her statement. However the Mfd president disagrees. Says Sam Logan Quot three out of the four trucks housed at the red barn Are registered to the Buchanan dam Mfd and the fourth truck is old. And i filed the official papers monday for tax exempt status for the Buchanan dam Logan said members of the Volunteer fire department want to operate under the new charter and planned to meet with the acc Mfd Board wednesday night to make that request. Logan confirmed that Volunteer firemen did solicit funds at a recent Barbecue for the newly chartered Volunteer fire department. Discord in the Buchanan Community surfaced last summer when the acc Mfd Board at that time got a temporary injunction against seven residents who they said were attempting at that time to separate the Volunteer fire department from the acc Mfd inc. District judge Jenny Ham Mand heard testimony in that matter last May and instructed both sides of the dispute to Quot work out their problems together Quot representatives of both sides signed an agreement july 7, 1977, which called for an election for a new acc Mfd inc. Board july 25. The three members of the Board at that time who received the most votes remained on the Board mrs. Lewis was one of them and four totally new members were also elected. Since then the Board has met Only once according to Logan. Quot i Don t believe the new members of the Board Are aware of that statement Quot Logan added referring to the statement mrs. Lewis gave to the bulletin. Another member of the acc Mfd Board Olen Miller who was elected july 25, said his main concern is Quot that we do not have a functioning fire the statement signed by mrs. Lewis was drafted Miller said because if we have to go Back to the judge we Don t want to catch people by Quot we have Given the opposing groundbreaking tuesday for new Industry Burnet a Hoover construction co. Has been awarded the contract for construction of United Cabinet s new building in Industrial Park. The groundbreaking for the Plant will be held september 20 at 10 30 . The Public is cordially invited to attend. Representatives of the City and county governments and the Burnet chamber of Commerce will join the architect and contractor at the ceremonies. Also present will be Ted Ruwitch and Doug Bard of Beatrice foods the Parent company of Aristokrat. Stan Krempp will represent Aristokrat at the groundbreaking. United cabinets is a division of Aristokrat which in turn is a division of Beatrice foods. County Grants historian Debo another year another $4,800 Burnet a Darrell Debo who has already received nearly $5,000 and a year s time to compile the history of Burnet county this week received the official Okay of county commissioners to receive another $4,800 of county taxpayers Money. Debo told the court that he was unfortunately unable to Complete the county s history in the one year and $400 per month the county agreed to. Commissioners who first contracted for the history a year ago happily and without question approved a full one year Extension for Debo. The local historian who has been employed in another Job for two months told commissioners that Progress continues slowly hampered by what he describes As inaccuracies in previous research. Some parts of the history Are fairly Well in order particularly the Briggs and Oakalla chapters. In other action at monday s meeting commissioners reappointed Camm Lary or. And Annie Mae Glimp to the Hospital Board for additional two year terms. Dan Mcbride his father in Law James Banner and another Banner son in Law Mark Humphries made the request for City of Burnet electricity since the property they plan to locate the feed business on is not in the City limits and should be served by the Pedernales electric Coopers rive. Pec has agreed to provide single phase electric service to the business but three phase service May be needed and the City is in a better position to provide that Type of service. Pec has informed Burnet City Man Ager Jack Tippit that they will not object to the variance request. Bertram in search of City Hall by Mues Hawthorne Bertram the Bertram City Council is in search of a City Hall having appointed a committee during their tuesday night meeting to investigate available buildings either for lease or Sale. The subject of the City Hall arose during discussion of the cramped conditions at the water department. Wayne lock and John Huggins brought to the Council s attention How crowded their office had become since the water department has begun sharing their limited office space with the City marshal the City judge the fire department the City Secretary and the Law enforcement committee. Lock proposed that the City authorize $2,100 for the water department to build a separate Structure in which to conduct its business free from interruptions. As it is now the workers have to lock up their paperwork every time they take a break to keep the water Bills from being jumbled. Discussion moved to whether or not the budget would Bear such a project Alderman Fred Felan pointing out that the Bertram Volunteer fire department had expressed a need last month for $2,000 to relocate from the water department building.
