Burnet County Bulletin (Newspaper) - October 31, 1977, Burnet, Texas A monday edition a Happy halloween vol. 104 no. 83 october 31,1977 revises Homestead exemption policy school Board opts out of firemen a pension Burnet the Burnet Board of education met briefly thursday afternoon in emergency session to consider the Volunteer fire fighters Relief and retirement fund. The fund was established under Senate Bill 411 during the last session of the state legislature. The fund would be supported in every fire District by political subdivisions of the state so that for each fire fighter in the District $12 per month would be contributed to the fund. Any political subdivision wish ing not to participate is required to elect to opt out by november 1. Otherwise they automatically Are required to participate. There has not yet been a Rural fire prevention District established in the Burnet area though lawyers advised the school Board according to superintendent Robert Wilkin that the Board should go ahead and exempt itself from the program in Case a fire District should be established in the future. Wilkin said that though he admires the firemen for the Job they do he does not feel that school taxpayers would consider participation in the program relevant. The Board voted unanimously to opt out of the program. Other discussion at the meeting was raised by tax collector assessor John Grissom who advised the Board of a new practice which the tax office has instituted concerning Homestead exemptions. The new procedure would allow taxpayers claiming the exemption to make their claims during october when they pay their taxes rather than waiting until january to make a return trip to make their claims. The Only drawback in the policy would he the possibility that someone might obtain an exemption and die before the first of the it s possible that you missed the time change yesterday morn ing and if so and you re won Dering Why you seem ahead of the year in which Case the exemption would remain in effect but because the exemptions crowd it s because Daylight Sav mrs time has passed for the year and everything is an hour behind when it was saturday. Must he renewed every year the loss of funds would he minimal according to Grissom that is Sunrise is no longer about j a rn., but instead is about 6 a in. Rumours held that the deed was done by seniors at bus and class rivalry was generally blamed for the premature conflagration. But students got out of school a Little Early thursday to rebuild the woodpile after the Bvrd extinguished the fire wednesday night. Warlords of spectators showed up at the scene of the arson attempt wednesday perhaps not wanting to miss the Bonfire in Case it burned Down but the annual Averil was saved by the fir fighters and thursday All went As planned As the scorch ing flames burned upwards through the pile of Wood to the top where two armadillos were Hung to symbolize die san Saba armadillos who were the main course at Friday night s Home coming game District m .6 Marble falls.28 Leander Burnet san s Burnet the Burnet High school Homecoming Bonfire went up Blazin Gly thursday night despite earlier attempts at arson wednesday.
