A comprehensive plan due revision Council seeks water strategy by Miles Hawthorne Burnet the City Council took Steps during a workshop session thursday to Correct problems of Low water pressure to increase the capacity of the sewage treatment Plant and to increase pumping capacity to the water softening Plant. The special session was attended by the Council and representatives of Bryant Carrington consulting engineers of Austin. Discussion entered on the problems facing the City in meeting the demand for water which increases As the City grows. With Many civic leaders looking to promotion of what Alderman Bill Wilcox called Quot the finest Industrial tracts in the state a the Council set up the meeting with . Quot slim Currington and his associates to explore the possibilities of increasing the water Supply water pressure and the capacity of the softening and sewage treatment plants. The open and casual discussion heard several concerns and questions Cost estimates and Federal Grants taking a prominent place in the conversation. The City s softening Plant is 27 years old and is in need of overhauling being in the words of City manager Jack Tippit Quot past the Point of just maintenance Burnet s water Supply is currently dependent upon Wells in the area and the aldermen expressed interest in the possibility of piping water in from Lake Buchanan. The project it was agreed would be an expensive one. The last comprehensive plan for the City s water system was drafted in 1969. Alderman mrs e c. Acc Mfd met for 12 minutes wednesday evening to respond to members of the Buchanan dam Volunteer fire department by Mfd saying thanks but no thanks to by Mfd s request that the acc Mfd drop the Mfd from their name. The two groups have Long bickered Over the overlapping duties and the question of who is More entitled to claim the responsibilities of fighting fires. The trustees of the acc Mfd also hired a fire chief Arthur l. Edmundson 72, at the salary of $1 per year. The trustees response came in the form of a letter signed by Inez Lewis chairman and read by her at the meeting. The letter said in part Quot. The Board of trustees has agreed the fire department will remain under the supervision of the Board of trustees of the Buchanan Community Center and Volunteer fire department inc., for the foreseeable future. The Board further agreed that every Effort will be made to establish a fire District As provided for by article Iii Section 48 d of the Constitution of Texas to be administered by the Llano county commissioners court the Cost to be borne by a minimal property tax to be levied by the commissioners the establishment of the fire District requires the signatures of at least too property owners. The trustees acknowledged that the project might take Quot considerable time to bring to fruition and might never be approximately 40 people attended the Short meeting and afterwards Mildred Logan questioned the Wisdom of the trustees action asking whether a Volunteer fire department can technically have a chief who is paid. The newspaper will also contain information from Burnet elementary school entitled Quot the kids future editions which will be printed in the bulletin twice monthly will contain news and photographs from the intermediate school and from Bertram elementary school. Mrs Carolyn Johnson Junior English teacher at Burnet High school is sponsor for the student newspaper. Some opponents have wondered if the trustees were not More concerned for their Bingo than for fighting fires. Most of the Active fire fighters in the Buchanan dam area belong to the by Mfd which operates under a separate charter from the acc Mfd and has its own president Sam Logan and fire chief . Santa. The two groups carried their feud to the District court of Llano county the 33rd judicial District and came away july 7 with a settlement agreement which has become fuel for the fire it seems More than it has served As a solution. Both factions quote the settlement agreement to Back their own contentions though it must be counted fortunate that so far the dispute has not hampered the firefighters in extinguishing fires in the area. The by Mfd assembles every monday for a business meeting. They Are expected to draft a reply to the latest development from the acc Mfd trustees at to night s meeting. The Engineer responded that he could have a study ready in 30 to 45 Days along with an update of the 1969 comprehensive plan. The Council also approved a motion to begin seeking a Federal Grant to double the capacity of the sewage treatment Plant. Tippit was instructed by the Council to work with City engineers on an in House study of the Cost for laying an additional pipe from the pumping station to the softening Plant to remedy the shortage of softened water. At present Only 40 per cent of the water used in the City gets softened. Tippit commented on the City s water system saying that in most cities the pipes Are Laid under the streets or in the easement but in Burnet the pipes run under and around houses through Yards and so Forth. Quot i have never seen a More tangled mess of intertwined lines in ail my life Quot he said. There was also discussion of running a pipe to the Industrial Park and beyond to residences in the East part of the City. In other action the Council approved a Resolution to authorize a study of Street signs in the City. The study has been completed by a service organisation from san Antonio College the office of traffic safety but tile workers need official approval in order to receive their Federal Grant. Traffic signs in Burnet were last erected on a Large scale in 1954 the new project is aimed at increasing the safety in the City and to bring the signs up to Standard specifications to avoid City liability in future mishaps.
