Burnett County observer RC Hullum endorsed Sheriff Wallace Riddell in the runoff against Cecil J. Rhoades Jr. Hullum criticized Rhoades for limiting protection to Marble Falls and cited Riddell’s broader county leadership. He emphasized Riddell’s experience and pledged to campaign for him before the June 5 election.
Cecil J. Rhoades Jr. accuses R.C. Hullum of endorsing Sheriff Riddell under political pressure as Burnet County voters prepare for the June 5 runoff. He recalls Hullum’s prior pledge to support him if in the runoff and says Hullum’s reversal raises questions about the county political power structure. Rhoades says he will continue his campaign with above board tactics and urges voters to decide on June 5.
Carlos Ashley Jr. announced he would not run in the June 5 runoff for the 33rd District Judges seat, citing time demands from a campaign against D.V. Jennie Hammond of Burnet and expected high Burnet turnout. The withdrawal deadline was May 14, per Texas election law.
A seven member nominating committee chosen by the Pedernales Electric Cooperative board selects incumbents and advisory directors for the June 21 PEC election. Nominated are R N Carson Warren Smith and W W Burnett for director terms and seven advisory directors led by Warren Clark and Harold Kongabel. The annual meeting is in Johnson City at LBJ High School or PEC HQ auditorium with proxy ballots available. The board also approved Marble Falls construction safeguards and routine bills, new member additions, and a 2.83 cent/kWh fuel adjustment.
Burnet County Sheriff Wallace Riddell says he is puzzled by the reaction to his bid for an additional deputy. He notes he has formally requested help before and stresses that funding rests with the county commissioners while praising current enforcement levels and his own performance.
Burnet School District reports an 88 837 settlement to cover hail damage with repairs estimated at 81 794 including cosmetic work at the elementary school and roofing upgrades at both campuses. The five year Comprehensive Study and Needs Report was approved to guide accreditation and student needs. A bid on laundry equipment for physical education was accepted from Watkins Distributing Co 3715 over Sears Roebuck 3090 for better track record. A drainage dispute near Vandeveer Road prompted concerns about a mosquito breeding ditch deemed a danger to children, with no action taken pending agenda.
