About 40 parents protested at the Burnet School Board meeting over cutting the kindergarten program to 90 days to align with state funding. A plan for a half day term for all students was supported by parents and to be studied further at a special meeting, with trustees citing administrative hazards and transportation concerns.
Robstown School Board named Harry P. Heickman principal of Robstown High School for three years with a starting salary of 24495 dollars per year and will teach eighth grade math. Heickman moves from Burnet where he served six years as principal and was named assistant principal and curriculum director. Burnet will replace him with former coach Cliff Vanderenterble. Superintendent W N Carter leads the district with 28 years in the Cody School system, as other personnel and bus routing issues are discussed.
Burnet City Council, in a 3-2 vote at a special meeting, approved raising residential cable charges from 7 to 7.50 monthly for Warner Cable. The decision followed a public hearing and cited pole rental increases and projected losses, with mixed questions about service quality from residents and hospital and nursing home concerns.
Johnson City PEC directors vote unanimously to file for declaratory judgment in district court to interpret the contract with the Lower Colorado River Authority amid an alleged under recovery. The board approves paying the current $1,046,483 under protest while seeking legal clarity on charge rights and potential power cuts.
Burnet hosts its tenth annual Fair and Rodeo July 30 31 at the Fair Grounds near Burnet on Hwy 281. Events include calf rag ing barrel racing steer dogging bronc riding bull riding and calf scramble with a petting zoo parade carnival barbecue country store and dance.
