Winnebago REA to consolidate 2235 phone users

The Winnebago Rural Electrification Association plans a major consolidation into the Winnebago Co-operative Telephone Association. A 452,000 loan request funds 746 miles of line, 2235 users, and 305 prospects. Engineering surveys, asset valuations, and capital credits to members precede anticipated March operation. Rates include 2.75 for rural 1 0 party lines and 4.00 for town 1 party business.

Editor Attending NEA Convention Drafted for Providence Trip

Editor George A. Carman leaves Garner by train to join a special editor convoy for the National Editorial Association 65th Annual Convention in Providence Rhode Island June 16 to 20. Boy Scouts Sleep Out and Camp Plan Near Town

Harris Felidek leads Boy Scouts who have enjoyed two overnight hikes, one on June Sth and another on June 10th. They plan more sessions to fix up a camp at Wessels Grove, half a mile north and a mile east, building stone fireplaces and cooking their own meals under the stars. The group uses tents or sleeps on blankets, striving to enjoy outdoor scouting, with encouragement for the boys. Also, the Ladies Aid of the Reformed Church announces an annual sale on Friday evening, June 23rd at 8:00, offering many fine items and serving lunch after.

Work Begins On Resurfacing Many B C Streets

Tuesday crews from Fairmont Minnesota started scarifying bladeing and leveling streets for later blacktopping. By Saturday evening 11 blocks were prepared including areas near City Park Highway 9 Baptist church and Dr MIller corner. The Fairmont firm used a scarifier mixer blade and a packer to create a smooth porous surface ready for oil and tar.

Large Crowd Attends VFW Auxiliary Charter Night

A charter night meeting of the newly organized Ladies Auxiliary Unit of VFW Post 4824 drew over seventy five attendees at the Post Home on Tuesday June 6. Out of town visitors from Britt Thompson Clear Lake Forest City Bancroft Des Moines Fort Dodge and Dennison joined local members. Mrs Bessie Jacobson opened the session and Mrs Hedwig Olson installed 33 members and officers with help from Britt’s initiation team. Distinguished officers and visiting dignitaries included Mrs Hedwig Olson Mrs Irene Bertsch and Mrs Bessie Facobson along with local post leaders. The evening featured remarks from visiting officers and congratulations from neighboring posts. The Auxiliary officers and members list follows with Norma Quaine as senior member and 4 color bearers Mary DeVries Virginia Gilbert Gloria Winter and Carol Schneider among others.

Business Men Hold Monthly Meeting at City Hall

The Business Men's Club held its monthly dinner at City Hall with about 35 attendees. Vice-president LuVon Kuchenreuther led in President Lande's absence. Ray Murray reported a net $30 profit from the athletic banquet. A July entertainment committee was named and summer recreational plans were discussed. The club voted to fund up to $100 to the City Soft Ball League to improve the diamond and bleacher seats, repayable if profits allow. A Boy Scout committee meeting followed.

Acting Scout Master Harris Feldick announces a Boy Scout Court of Honor at City Hall at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 21. Summer Playground Activities Open June 19

The Business Men's Club plans a summer of recreation for boys and girls with Eddie Langhus as director. The first meeting is 10:00 a.m. Monday June 19 at City Park to plan activities and coordinate with children. Tennis and tumbling on Tue Thu Sat. baseball and handicrafts on Mon Wed Fri. Former Mayor Costigan Suffers Severe Heart Attack

G L Costigan Ill Roy Costigan, our former mayor, after returning from a week in Minnesota, suffered a severe heart attack early Sunday morning. He was taken to Dolmage hospital and is holding his own at this writing. We are hopeful for steady improvement in his condition.
