Bison Firecracker Days Planned By Buffalo Center Club
Buffalo Center Community Club unveils a day long 4th of July event with a Firecracker 5K Run Walk starting at 8 am awarding medals in seven age groups, and the first annual Firecracker Parade at 10 am inviting entries with registration due June 27. Free Lions Park activities after the parade include inflatables face painting and a pet related event.

The community announces July 4 activities including sand volleyball at North Town park signups by June 27, pedal pull at 1 pm, and Music in the Park at Lions Park sponsored by the Buffalo Center Historical Society. Lions Park events run to 4 pm with a concession by the Community Club, food items listed, and donations sought. Fireworks at dusk from Bison Field, NIHS Boosters pie auction at 7 pm, Kids Olympiad at 8 pm, and a Fire Department fireworks finale. Also a July 21 Lion’s Club consignment auction at Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Thompson to support the fair and club activities. Items include farm equipment, vehicles, boats, guns. commissions scale with sale total. Contact numbers provided for consignments.

Peterson wins Winnebago sheriff GOP nomination in June primary
Dave Peterson of Lake Mills defeated incumbent Doug Jenson of Forest City 843 to 690 in the Republican primary, a 55 to 45 percent margin. Jenson will run as an independent in November after a prior 2008 independent win over Peterson. Karla Niederkoffer and Mike Stensrud won unopposed GOP bids for auditor and District 2 supervisor. State races saw Todd Gasman win House District 7 GOP nomination over Mark Frakes. Frakes carried Winnebago County 749 to 730 but Gasman led statewide 1,233 to 978. Dennis Guth claimed Senate District 4 GOP nod. Bob Jennings unopposed for Dems. Steve King selected as Republican for U.S. House District 4. King and Vilsack run unopposed. General election set for November 6.

Veteran teacher Mrs Keil retires after four decades in Iowa schools
Susan Keil ends a 38 year teaching career spanning Thompson and North Iowa. Raised in Mason City, she studied at NIACC and Iowa State, taught in Waco and College Station before returning to Iowa. She taught multiple elementary grades, found fifth grade a favorite, and plans gardening, travel, and canning. Her husband Bob runs the family farm in Thompson.
