George Kilen Re elected President of Holstein Breeders Association
George Kilen of Lake Mills was reelected president of the Winnebago County Holstein Breeders Association at the annual meeting held in Thompson on Tuesday evening January 20. Kenneth Hanna was re elected vice president and Harold Knable will succeed Terry Thompson as secretary treasurer. Henry Nelson will represent the county on the Iowa Holstein Breeders Association board. Sewell Nelson and Terry Thompson were named as directors. The group heard talks on breed shows herd classification and testing work and approved a Holstein Handbook for 4 H and Smith Hughes dairy projects.

Soybean Seed Testing At Home For Farmers
Winnebago County farmers are urged to test soybean seed at home using only sand in a wooden box. County Extension Director C E Judd and plant pathologist E P Sylvester advise 4 to 6 lots of 100 seeds planted one inch deep with room-temperature sand, light, and moisture kept. Read tests in 8 to 10 days, average results, and adjust seeding rate for a good stand. Seed samples are being collected at Iowa State College for those who wish to mail a pound of seed for testing.

Sunshine Birthday Club meets at Steffensen home
The Sunshine Birthday Club met at the A. C. Steffensen home on Wednesday afternoon January 14. Twelve members and one visitor attended. Half Million Gardens Targeted for Iowa in 1948
Iowa aims to grow half a million gardens in 1948 as part of the Freedom Garden campaign to ease household costs and boost world food supply. Extension horticulturist L. C. Grove notes a backyard plot can yield $50 to $100 in produce per season, with larger plots rising accordingly. Iowa State College extension entomologist Harold Gunderson reports codling moth larvae overwinter behind rough bark on tree trunks and in branch crotches. He advises removing rough bark during cold weather to expose and destroy the larvae before spring.

Gunderson advised county extension director C E Judd that a water sprayer can rapidly remove rough bark and clean trunks with 500 to 600 pounds pressure. Spraying works in cold weather if the sprayer reaches the orchard. each worm killed now reduces moths next May.

Out of Gas in Iowa Runway Improves After Refuel
Don Patterson of St Joseph Ohio landed in a pasture west of Northwood Iowa when his plane ran dry. After refueling he and local farmers cleared a three hour runway but could not launch with wife and two children aboard. He later took off alone to a nearby highway filling station where the family joined him. Traffic delayed briefly but a successful takeoff followed.
