Research at the Towa agricultural experiment station finds four main benefits from cover crops seeded with corn and other crops. They protect soil August through May, add organic matter during May and June, increase soil nitrogen via legumes, and raise next year’s corn yield. A practical seeding method uses an endgate seeder with cultivation weeders to broadcast seed.
Sweet clover and alfalfa raise soil nitrogen and organic matter when fed with lime phosphate and potash. In Newton Ti tionis trials, lime fed plots yielded 63 pounds more nitrogen and a ton more organic matter per acre versus lime only. Deep tap roots improve soil tilth and mineralize matter, aiding future crops.
Dairy farmers with average annual per cow around 6000 pounds are urged to raise output. Howard Selby of United Farmers of New England argues 7500 pounds per cow could be feasible and bring economics closer to other groups. The motion claims higher production is attainable and beneficial.
