Bison 5 Win and Lose in Friday Basketball Summary

The Bison 5 defeated Titanka High School 56 to 28 at home on Friday December 8. The freshman sophomores beat the visitors 46 to 20. Forest City Redskins topped the Bisons 38 to 19, with Langerud scoring 18 for Forest City. Belmond Broncos visit Friday, and Northwood game on December 19 brings two more conference tests.

Post Office to Stay Open All Day Saturday

The local United States Postal Office will remain open until 5:00 p m on the two Saturdays before Christmas. Postmaster Rank and his attendants will be on duty from 7:30 to 5:00 on Saturday December 16 and Saturday December 23. The change will greatly convenience patrons mailing or expecting Christmas mail.

Trucker Injured While Helping Car From Ditch

Louis Lawman a milk truck driver from Estherville was aiding a car out of a ditch Wednesday forenoon when another vehicle struck him. He sustained a concussion bruises and a broken wrist and was transported to Spirit Lake hospital.

Visitor from Holland Makes Long Journey to Buffalo Center

Frederick Spreuwers, a seventeen year old from Holland, arrived in America for an indefinite stay with his uncle Fred Stratman in Buffalo Center. He sailed from Holland aboard the Edam November 17 and landed in New York December 2 after 16 days at sea. He speaks little English yet and is welcomed by the Stratmans who recently toured Europe by air.

Cars Collide On Icy Pavement West Of Town

Two cars were badly damaged on Highway No 9 three miles west of town after both drivers tried to veer into the ditch to avoid a collision. Mrs George Anderson of Hartley and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Paris of Armstrong escaped serious injury with minor cuts and shakes. Damage estimated near $1000.

Grant Township Among First In Crop Drive Completion

The 1950 Christian Rural Overseas Program drive nears completion in Winnebago County. County chairman Nels Branstad urges reporting and cooperation as some areas have yet to report. Total reported funds reach $4,766.53 with multiple townships listed: Grant Township led rural areas with $488.00, Lake Mills $266.53, Elles Alland $870.50, Buffalo Center $415.65, and others such as Mt Valley $532.00, King Township $306.00, Eden $372.00, Lincoln $?, Forest City $144.00, Newton Township $236.50.

Santa Claus Arrives Saturday for Free Childrens Rides

Merchants sponsor two pre Christmas weekends of child friendly events with Santa arriving Saturday at 1 30 pm for rides candy and skating in Buffalo Center The December schedule includes a second Santa appearance December 28 at the Iowa Theatre with Dagwood and Blondie movie and cartoons and a 1 00 pm show for practicing children followed by a 3 00 pm second showing a continuous 5 pm party and babysitting service for parents.

Hospital notes record births for Mr. and Mrs. Paul Batton of Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gill of Rake. Many patients, including Mrs. Robert Janssen, Katherine Berschman, Harold Vahnke, Mrs. Wm. Ley, John Mickelson, Keith Brandt, Dennis Anderson, Mrs. John Engels, Neal Kiewiet, Mrs. Claus DeBoer, Mrs. Henry Mayland, and Mr. Edward Vahnke, were admitted or dismissed for various treatments and operations across December. A son weighing 7 pounds 7 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Batton. A son weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Gruss. Margaret Teidens was admitted for a major operation and Wanda Roth was admitted for treatment. Mrs. Paul Batton and son of Thompson were dismissed.

Candy drive for Schick hospital at Clinton

The Auxiliary of the Veterans for Foreign Wars asks the district to send 525 boxes of candy for Christmas to Schick hospital in Clinton. Vivian Steinberg, hospital chairman, requests members to make and deliver candy to her house or Steinberg Produce by Monday evening December 18.

The Woman's Community Club schedules a Christmas party at its next regular meeting on Tuesday evening December 19. Burns at Work Injure Clarence Bosma at Sloper Sales

While welding at a Sloper Sales Company bench last Monday, Clarence Bosma was burned when a spark ignited a nearby oil pail. He grabbed the burning container to move the fire outside, flames flashed around his right hand and wrist causing painful burns. He was taken to Dolmage hospital for first aid and is now bandaged and resting.

The Winnebago County selective service board meets Thursday December 14 at 1 30 p m. Henry C Nelson of Forest City, appointed to fill the vacancy from Chairman Salveson’s resignation, will attend his first meeting. Many 2 C deferments will be up for re classification.

Winnebago Schools Get $31,259.10 Transportation Aid

Winnebago county schools received 31,259.10 in state transportation aid for the 1949 50 school year, calculated at 92.7 percent of 33,718.28 total claims. Forest City led in the county, followed by Lake Mills and Buffalo Center Consolidated, with each district listed in the published figures.

FFA Boys Plan Fertilizer Plot At Buffalo Center

The Buffalo Center FFA met December 11 at the school to sell boxes of garden seeds and take seed orders. Members plan a fertilizer plot and seek four to five acres of land to rent. A earnings and savings committee was formed to boost the chapter treasury, with Virgil and Howard Bosma Merle Hauskins and Johnny Boehm named to work with it alongside Darwin Bowers Kenneth Balvance Ray Bowers Alroy Krull and Jerome Sheldon. Also noted were a visit from Bill and Bill Behrends of Lamberton and the birth of a son to Mr and Mrs Martyn Asmus on December 11 at Blue Earth hospital.

Anderson Re-Elected Co PMA Chairman in Winnebago County

A. E. Anderson was re elected chairman of the Winnebago County Production and Marketing Administration at Saturday’s county PMA meeting held in Thompson. He has led the county PMA for five years. The meeting also elected Elmer O. Holtan as vice chairman and named Lauris A. Albertson, Clarence Carlson, and Edward J. Price as officers for respective townships. Rehires included Nina H. Sandell as secretary treasurer Elayne M. Mitchell as chief clerk and Winona R. Schnebly and Mary Ann Malley as office assistants.
