Miss Caroline Kern received a message Monday telling of the death of her uncle Mr Joe Kern at his home near Mobile Alabama He visited his nieces Caroline and Verbie Kern in Bryan several times during the life of their father the late L B Kern and made many friends here who will regret his passing.
Brazos County Free Fair Board of Earl Graham Post No 159 invites fair committees and others involved in planning to a barbecue Friday night at the Fair Grounds. An interesting program will be staged and final discussions held on fair features and exhibit setup before opening.
Austin Sept 25 session rules were suspended to allow the Texas House to complete passage of a Senate bill regulating refined petroleum products by the Texas railroad commission. The Senate consented to suspending its rule prohibiting final 24 hour bill passage after the House had already voted to suspend.
The Texas House reversed its prior decision and adopted the conference committee report to issue 6 million dollars in state relief bonds. Quick Senate action toward final adoption of the report is anticipated.
Merrill Philp of the Bryan Motor Company was named a Ford Motor Company trip winner. He left Tuesday to join Texans in Houston for a ten day journey to Chicago, with the group receiving ten gallon hats spurs and boots for the trip.

The Brazos County grand jury was reconvened Tuesday morning. Officials expect many more cases to be presented and doubt a final report will be issued tonight. Completion of their labors likely will stretch into Wednesday.
Bryan Lions Club luncheon featured athletic coaches from Texas A M College and Stephen F. Austin high school. Officials noted strong freshman enrollment over 1300 and bright outlooks in football track intramural sports and baseball.

Gov. Miriam A. Ferguson appointed W. A. Morrison of Cameron to fill the unexpired term of the late S. M. Burns district attorney. Morrison, 25, UT graduate, and recent Cameron city attorney, succeeds Burns who died Friday.
A. D. Jackson of College and Mrs. Lee J. Rountree traveled to Austin to lobby the Brazos conservation district bill. The measure, approved by the Senate, faces the House after a decade of local advocacy by the late Lee J. Rountree and Mrs. Rountree.
Huntsville Texas September 25 two inmates escaped from the new unit of the Central State Prison farm near Sugar Land last week. Arthur Stone alias Arthur Medley left in guard clothes while Owen Richards rode away on a guard s horse. Stone fled during the rodeo crowd Thursday and Richards during a rodeo cattle roundup Sunday.
A total of 918,962 corn hog farmers in 39 states have received $86,220,880 in rental checks for land taken out of production this year. The figure covers about 66 percent of the $1338,000,000 first payment total due, with 75 percent of contracts signed received and released for payment across 522 counties. State totals include Arkansas $329,133.20 Kansas $5,140,920.45 Oklahoma $839,711.05 and Texas $943,188.25.
Pender the Morro Castle night watchman testified before a federal board that he heard a loud explosion and believes the liner was bombed, as the ship burned at sea with two deaths near New York on September 25.
After a survey of local merchants led by E. E. Yeager the Trade Extension committee, Bryan and Brazos County directors voted to drop a Fall Style Show this year in favor of a pre Christmas event featuring a Santa Claus parade. The vote was about 50 50 with Houston visitors welcomed at the meeting. Col. C. C. Todd presided as guests from Houston introduced themselves and outlined business ties before a brief exchange of visits.
Percy A. Rockefeller nephew of John D. Rockefeller and prominent New York financier died Tuesday in New York. He was a director in major banks and industrial firms and was among the nation’s wealthiest men.
Federal Judge James C. Wilson ruled a man cannot be held responsible for his wife’s conduct in a Shamrock liquor case. Bogus D. Underwood had sought to plead guilty, but the judge rejected the plea and noted he cannot hold a man accountable for his wife’s actions. Underwood’s wife had previously served a jail term for helping operate a still.
West Texas State Teachers College adds Archaeology department led by Prof. C Stuart Johnson from the University of Oklahoma. Courses cover American Indian and Southwest cultures with studies of Aztec Maya and Inca, with field trips planned in spring.
Ward Mooring a member of the Steele's Store area board of trustees gave twenty five dollars to the county cur al school library and twenty five dollars to the Steele's Store school library. County superintendent Mrs. W E Neeley announced the gifts on Thursday saying the funds will be used to add needed volumes to both libraries.
Policeman Lee Norwood is nursing a broken left thumb from a minor Saturday night car accident. Police say no other injuries or damage occurred.
Brazos County tax records show a record surge in auto tag registrations for 1934. County tax collector Guy Harris reports 3 800 licenses allotted, new plates arriving from A90 300 to A96 750, with 725 truck tags issued so far and all 1934 tags valid until March 31 1935.
The Woman's Missionary Society of the First Baptist church elected officers for the upcoming year beginning October 1. Officers include President Mrs. J. Coulter Smith, Recording Secretary Mrs. S. C. Dr. L O Wilkerson, a Bryan physician and amateur pilot, fell about 300 feet during a Friday flight nearSulphur Spring Road. He survived with a compound ankle fracture and facial cuts, in stable condition and recovering, after the Waco two passenger plane he piloted suffered a nose-down crash near his home. Witnesses estimated altitudes of 150 to 300 feet, and officials say he was in the rear cockpit.
The Kurten school district will buy a bus to transport high school students to Bryan to attend Stephen F. Austin High. Officials will design routes to include Reliance high school pupils and connect Kurten and Reliance communities. This marks the third bus line serving area students.
