One Hundred Nine Men Ordered to the Colors from Brazos County

The Brazos County exemption board reports 109 white men allotted to fill the quota and be entrained after district board certification. The list includes Dr W H Lawrence of Brazos County and others. remaining exemption appeals were denied or unresolved, with potential future calls for the three named individuals. The move signals the first section of the drafted army to begin training by week’s end.

Clyde Cooley Shot and Wounded in Texas Feud

Clyde Cooley manager of the Butler place was shot about 2 PM today by a negro, Jim Hamilton, who fled. The shotgun blast ripped off half his face leaving him in very serious condition after Dr. Oliver provided surgical care. Sheriff Nunn mobilized officers and notified Burleson county to search for Hamilton. Cooley, about 40 and unmarried, had worked at the Butler place for years. Hamilton, married farmer on Mial place, previously had good standing. The motive remains unknown.

Pink boll worm crackdown expands from Hearne field

Six additional pink boll worms were found near Hearne prompting an expanded eradication campaign led by Texas A&M entomologist F B Paddock. Hearne becomes base for operations with a training group of scientists and 45 more acres to be burned in the district under Chamber of Commerce guidance.

San Antonio Crossing Put in Good Shape

Prof Richard McDonald of Norman visited Bryan to discuss improvements at the San Antonio crossing at a four county corner. He noted the Leon county eastern bridge is finished and grading will start soon, crediting recent reconstructions for access after heavy rains.

Drafted Negroes to Respond October 15

Chairman Arrington of the local exemption board said he visited Austin and learned the adjutant general’s office indicated the negroes would be ordered into training October 15. They will be drafted and sent to training camps as camp quarters are not yet finished.

McDonald Appointed Court Stenographer

Judge H. 8 Morehead of the eighty fifth judicial district including Brazos county has filed an order with District Clerk Barron appointing Z McDonald of Collin county to the position of official court reporter. The court will open Monday with a heavy docket and the grand jury will be empaneled Monday.

Rhode Island Red Association Plans Bryan Show This Fall

The Texas Rhode Island Red association will hold a state exhibit at the Brazos county poultry show in Bryan on December 6 to 8.
