Mr and Mrs R O Berry return to Bryan and College for another school year and live in a cottage owed by Mr and Mrs T B Wood on College Road. Mr Berry remained at College after summer study at State University while Mrs Berry visited relatives in Godley Texas. Mrs H C Fulgham and son Henry Jr spent summer in Jackson Mississippi and returned Sunday with Mrs Fulgham's mother Mrs S H Howell who will winter with the Fulghams.
Relief headquarters began distributing fresh meat cuts in Brazos County on Monday with plans for a 24 hour cannery supply if cattle can be secured. Cuts come in 2 1/2 and 5 pound portions. 230 pounds were handed out today. Two TB patients, Miss Lena Weise and Mrs Roma Davis Lovell, were sent to the Baptist Sanitarium in El Paso after admission to a state facility proved crowded. county administrator Mrs J L Brock arranged care with relief funds.
Bryan and Brazos county Democrats left Sunday and Monday for the state convention in Galveston. Delegates driving down included F. L. Henderson Wilson Bradley Coulter Hoppess W. R. Allen and Judge W C Davis. Others going today were A S Ware Jesse Gammon K T Tillis Ed Martin and Mrs Lee J Rountree. Delegates caucused Monday to endorse a state executive committee member from this senator ial district and perhaps a candidate for state chairman and national committeeman. No action was taken at the county convention held weeks ago.
At the Texas state democratic convention Robert Lee Bobbitt of Laredo, former attorney general, pledged allegiance to the New Deal and urged party harmony. Temporary officers aligned with Allred supporters were approved. Ferguson resigns as national committeeman, with Garner elected to succeed him. Davis moves to advise via telegraph to confirm the changes.
In response to a letter from State Senator Albert Stone, the Lions Club urged lawmakers to advance a plan cutting direct relief across local state and national appropriations. The group also held Committee Day sessions to outline annual plans, noted Bryan College Entertainment series starting in October, with Vilhjalmur Stefansson speaking October 22 and six major events planned. Delegates Pistole, Sankey Park, and Coulter Smith reported on the Houston banquet honoring International President Vincent C. Hascall of Omaha, Neb.
Eben Abott chief engineer of the liner Morro Castle testified that within thirty minutes of the alarm he launched a lifeboat with 32 persons, only two of them passengers, and no other passengers were seen as the boat left under the captain's orders while Asbury Park battles the blazing ship. Firemen cannot board the vessel.
Asbury Park N J Sept 11 The body of Capt Robert R Willmott who died hours before the Morro Castle nearly burned was found Monday in the captain s quarters aboard the vessel Fire Chief William F Taggart located the body on the cabin floor near Willmott s keys The room had been heavily damaged by heat melting the bed legs and leaving the captain s quarters among the last areas reached by the flames Officials planned to move the body Tuesday after a cooling period.
Louis J. Zamanek and Mary Luza and Jesse J. Jefferson and Dessie Lee O Rice applied for marriage licenses through County Clerk Clyde Goen.
Miss Gladys Hall from the Midwestern Branch of the American Red Cross in St. Louis will visit Brazos County on Wednesday and Thursday September 12 and 18 to discuss the 1934 Red Cross roll call with M. L. Cashion and Rev. J. B. Gleissner. The meeting is set for Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Bryan City Hall.
Bryan and College business leaders joined Sixth District members of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce in Navasota for a detailed session on the federal housing program and proposed state constitution amendments to be voted in November. Eustace Myers of Dallas, housing administration attorney, explained program details as T A Low presided and dinner was served by Navasota Civic Club women at the August Horst country club.
Bryan becomes the district headquarters for the Future Farmers of America with meetings planned at Stephen F. Austin High School. Henry Ross, advisor, announced a busy year as district chapters from Caldwell Cook's Point Hearne Normangee Franklin and Bryan join. Officers include Jack Gregg president Robert Trant VP Harvey D. Watson secretary Waldie Sosolik treasurer Al Lock and advisor Ross. Committees were named to nominate officers and set year objectives. Next meeting is Monday September 17 with new members to be initiated.
Bryan schools report higher first day enrollments than on the third day of 1933 with Stephen F. Austin at 420 Bowie 400 Kemp negro high 162 and negro elementary 413. Third day 1983 figures list Austin 423 Bowie 401 Kemp 156 and negro elementary 377. Kemp negro school affiliation drew families to Bryan for in district schooling.
George Salazar Mexican was held to the grand jury by Justice J. T. McGee on Thursday for stealing a truck owned by John Reis. Salazar, turned over to Sheriff J. H. Reed by Reis, remains in the county jail.
J. J. Hareus escaped serious injury when his car left Highway 6 north of Bryan, flipped several times, and plunged to a 50-foot embankment while avoiding workers. He suffered a wrenched back, was removed from the wreck, and taken to Bryan by a passing motorist on his way to Hearne.
Thomas Matejk 68 prosperous farmer of the Edge neighborhood killed himself with a shotgun at his home about 8 oclock Monday morning. Seated in the front seat of his automobile he discharged both barrels blowing off the top of his head. His wife and son witnessed the act. County officials ruled death by own action. Funeral services set for Tuesday at his residence two miles north of Edge with interment in Wheelock cemetery. Survived by wife, five sons, two daughters, and a brother.
Fall garden track is coming up in Bryan home gardens after light showers. Rain on Monday revived plants and now mustard and turnip greens fall onions radishes and collards show well, reflecting the South’s long beloved produce.
M J Tremont reports Brazos County pecan crop looks better than expected after field inspection. Northern county yields expected to be good with a possible 25 percent shortage, while the locale projects around 20 cars compared with 33 last year.
Strong Sunday winds and rain left scattered damage in Bryan and nearby areas. Rain totaling .78 inches helped refill drought soils while wind toppled trees and barns and knocked out telephones in several farmsteads. A farm house and tenant buildings were moved or wrecked, with notable damage reported near Booneville and Steep Hollow communities and at local stores and garages. Reports from Caldwell followed.
Almost all potential students at Woodville school attended the term opening led by teacher Mrs. P. A. Tardy. Books were distributed and assignments set for seven grades. Thirty children were present as several students move to Tabor with the new school bus, few additions expected.
Brazos County received an allotment of cotton exemption certificates totaling about 475000 dollars. Delivery to farmers started at 9 a m at the county agent's office with Eva Fridel, a tenant farmer on the John Kopecky place, the first recipient. The 14026 bale allotment will be delivered as quickly as possible.
COLLEGE STATION Sept. 11 Texas Allotment Board reports that 201 of 239 cotton counties filed 317 292 applications for Bankhead Act cotton tax exemption certificates. About 96 counties have issued roughly 240 000 certificates. The board’s headquarters remains a busy hive with three shifts operating around the clock by over five hundred workers.
President Roosevelt and General Hugh S Johnson outlined plans to reorganize the National Recovery Administration into a compact three-branch federal model. Johnson will lead the executive branch, with the judicial branch handling labor disputes and code duties, and a policy fixing legislative department.
Bids will be received Thursday at 10 a.m. in the county superintendent's office for operating three county bus lines to transport high school pupils to Bryan. The routes include Steele's Store to Smetana, Kurten through Wixon Prospect, and near Edge through Tabor. Estimated riders total 50 to 75 across the three lines with 15–25 on line one, 20–30 on line two, and 15–20 on line three.
Miss Louise Pipkin daughter of Rev and Mrs J J Pipkin has been elected to teach in Port Arthur city schools and will leave for her new post Thursday. She has taught the second grade at A and M Consolidated and will likely continue similar work in Port Arthur.
Seven year old Joseph Gelber son of Mr and Mrs W F Gelber received fractures just above the wrist and at the elbow of his right arm after a fall from a tree while playing Sunday afternoon He is left handed and was with other children at the time of the accident.
Directors of Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce discussed loans for repair and modernization of homes. They urged homeowners with needed repairs to apply to local agencies or HULC, which works to clear pending applications and accept new ones, as a means to boost employment in the community.
