Rookie from Army Desertion on Houston Train

Deputy sheriffs captured Charles Leeto a 26 year old US Army rookie from Company E Fifth Infantry on a northbound train. He had fled Houston after a shooting and confessed to desertion and slacker status. An army captain ordered his detention and a return inquiry was arranged.

State Pensioners On An Equal Basis

Austin Taene Sept. 1 Commencing today all Confederate veterans drawing pensions in the state, about 19 000, are placed on an equal basis under a pension law amendment. Previously totally disabled pensioners received nearly twice as much as others. now funds are evenly distributed. Warrants are mailed under the new law as a special 5 cent tax on the $100 property valuation raises about $1 000 000 for pensions.
