A Bryan couple tied the knot in Navasota on Monday evening, with six young friends from Bryan attending. The bride and groom were Hubbard Gussett and Bessie Battern, and Rev. S C Guthrie performed the ceremony at the Presbyterian manse before the couple returned to Bryan.
Miss Lacey and home improvement expert Mrs. Bernice Claytor spoke on yard upkeep and cleaning. The meeting welcomed a new member as Frances Salviggio reported attendance of club girls including Francis Salvaggio and Lucy Collette among others.
Senator Fess of Ohio quoted after White House meeting saying President Coolidge would not consent to be drafted for a Republican National Convention renomination. Fess reported the President publicly objected to being drafted and would not commit to a 28 candidate slate.
Purina representatives Collins and Wickes present a four act comedy The Lay of a Hen at Kurten auditorium on Thursday night October 27. W R Glazener will lead a team of specialists for a poultry themed evening described as a humorous yet informative poultry lecture. Cast includes Lett M Russell Mrs Russell Phil A Baskett and Red FE Service. Free admission. Brazos County Poultry Association supports the event with one 8 pm performance for local poultry enthusiasts.
Hon. W. C. Davis, district judge, tends a 12 year old pecan tree planted before his home. The tree bears pecans two inches long and about one and a quarter inches in diameter, said to be the largest in the area. He is noted as a staunch believer in growing pecans.
Mr and Mrs J L Sample of Cottonwood near Tabor attended the Brazos County association meeting in the city. Mr and Mrs Elbert Moore and Mrs Roy Foster of Steep Hollow were in Bryan visiting and shopping. Miss Essie Shealey of Reliance is visiting friends in Bryan today.
Abilene October 20 Lloyd Conaster on trial for killing Sheriff Bob Smith of Fisher County and deputy Jake Owens near Roby last August. He claims Joyce Sheppard alias Bill Smith fired the shots. Sheppard and his companion face trial next Wednesday for Owens death.
Brazos County Teachers Association endorses W. L. Hughes for president of the State Teachers Association. Hughes, rural education director at A and M College, is described as an outstanding educator with a large statewide following ahead of the November 29 Houston meeting.
College Station reaches the required number of signers for gas service to Bry an and College. The 115 signers include M. Francis J. T. L. McNew C. C. Yates G. F. Boyette and others from local businesses and institutions such as Methodist Tabernacle Bachelor Apartments and Angiel and Pharmacy.
The Parker-Astin Heard ware Company presents gas heaters in three sizes for room or fireplace use. They emit heat into the air and provide healthful warmth. This is Bryan’s first display of gas heaters and it attracts much interest.
In WALLENBURG Colorado on October 20 striking I W W miners commenced picketing the southern Colorado coal mines in defiance of an order from the State Industrial Commission.
The appointment of two new members of the Supreme Court Commission of Appeals was announced by Governor Moody. Richard Critz of Taylor was named to succeed W. R. Bishop on Section A, and C. A. Leddy of Dallas was appointed to succeed Ben Powell, Section B. Terms run six years.
The civil docket shows settlements in several cases this week. August Straub vs. Missouri Pacific railroad awarded $250 to the plaintiff. Allen Smith vs. Southern Pacific settled out of court for $500 and costs. Joe Conaway Estate vs. Southern Pacific settled out of court for $1,500 death claim and $250 for truck damage after Conaway was killed by a train near Bryan. Attorneys listed include W. E. Neeley, Frank Woods, Armstrong & Armstrong, R. J. Jones, Lamar Bethea, and W. S. Barron.
Lawyers for A V Milliken sentenced to death for killing Mrs Virginia Petty asked to transfer his sanity trial to a different county in a motion prepared for the afternoon district court session at Lockhart where he faces electrocution.
A 60 member cadet corps from Allen Academy Bryan shipped by special car to Dallas to compete in the Southwest ROTC junior unit drill at the Dallas Fair. Jimmie Dunn leads the group with Captain George W Griner and Sergeant C B Jones in charge.
Fort Stockton report states Dave Mitchell was convicted in district court for the September 1927 slaying of Pat Murphy and sentenced to 35 years in the penitentiary.
Storm continues to lash the East from Sunday. Western and Central Pennsylvania report flooded homes bridges out and interrupted railroad service as the weather disrupts travel and daily life.
College Station Oct 20 Young women from across the state will be invited to participate in the Saddle and Sirloin Club rodeo and pageant at A and M College November 4. Funds raised defray expenses of the stock judging team for the International meet in Chicago. The event features fancy riding horse hurdling broncho busting and roping. It precedes the Aggie S M U football clash and serves as a home coming for animal husbandry students and former athletes.
Former Texas Governor Pat M. Neff visited the White House to present a fruitcake made from Texas ingredients to President Calvin Coolidge. The presentation occurred in Washington on October 19.
Dr John C Meakins of McGill University told the Institute Postgraduate Medical Association that rheumatic fever often starts in children as young as five and 90 percent develop heart disease. He said rheumatism is a misused term and that rheumatic fever is a fever with joint swelling not true rheumatism.
Mr and Mrs Eri H Astin and Miss Allie Conway returned from Franklin where they attended the funeral of Mr L L Bradbury on Wednesday afternoon.
Bryan High prepares for a crucial Friday 3 PM showdown at Allen Field against San Jacinto of Houston. Injured key players include captain Horace Dansby Curtis Cobb Cecil Martin and Vergne Adams but many will still play. Coach Claude Poe emphasizes fundamentals and may deploy the forward pass as San Jacinto’s strength. Houston fans arrive by special train with local merchants granting workers time off to attend.
The Brazos County Baptist Association met at College Avenue Baptist Church in Bryan with all fourteen churches represented. W H Buchanan was moderator. officers elected include P S Park moderator and Chas Locke vice moderator. The day featured reports from churches, a noon dinner, and an evening sermon by Dr F S Groner of Dallas urging attendance.
A women led push aims to collect 600 signers for natural gas in Bryan though the town lags the target. A mass meeting at the Chamber of Commerce led by W H Cole organized sections and additional residents and businesses signed on including Mike Altimore T H Black McDuff Simpson John Winter and many more.
Washington October 20 government oil counsel pressed charges that Albert Falls sought secrecy in negotiations with Harry Sinclair over the Teapot Dome lease. The testimony aimed to mislead other applicants for the naval oil reserve as the criminal conspiracy trial of Falls and Sinclair continued.
New York October 20 The United States District Court Judge Goddard issued an opinion that fight films may be exhibited in any state. The ruling supports the legality of showing boxing and other fight films across state lines.
A lone masked robber kidnapped William Baker a grocery store messenger in Houston at a busy downtown intersection. He was driven into the country and robbed of about $5 000 in cash and checks according to Associated Press.
Clemente Rodriguez sentenced to die in the electric chair for attacking a San Antonio high school girl will remarry his estranged wife, aged 19, in a church ceremony today in his death cell. The couple had wed by justice of the peace more than a year ago. They reconciled after the death sentence was pronounced and plan a church wedding before his execution.
Coleman October 20 The death penalty was given to O. C. Wells by a jury here for the murder of store keeper J. A. Mitchell in January 1927.
WACO Oct 20 Eleven cent hogs and 20 cent corn offer Central Texas farmers a money making opportunity. E R Eudaly swine husbandman of A and M warns that balanced rations and proper housing are essential for profitability, citing Ton Litter contests as proof hogs can be produced at a profit with correct feeding and management.
