Resting land folly resisted by Alabama experiment
The Alabama Experiment Station shows legume fields outperform fallow, with velvet beans yielding 7 064 pounds of sorghum hay per acre vs 3 792 on fallow land, and oats at 33.6 bushels per acre after velvet beans compared with 8.4 after crab grass. Idle acres waste soil. A legume crop boosts humus and nitrogen while allowing fall or spring crop prep.
