D. Muir, named by President Roosevelt, is a Boston born captain in the Army Reserve Corps aged thirty six. A former Veterans' Bureau worker, he joined the White House staff as assistant to the chief usher over three years ago. He will manage admissions, ceremonies, seating, calling cards, and reception directions. He has a new law degree from Washington Law School earned at the same ceremony as Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Government Pork Distributed for Needy Countywide

The county relief head says 1035 pounds of government pork arrived in Houston and will be brought to the county for distribution. Packages are 100 pounds, with seven pounds per family as the maximum share. Additional food consignments such as butter eggs beef and cotton seed products are expected this winter for the destitute.

Clyde Goen Wins In Central Texas Pasture Contest

In College Station on October 11 twelve district winners were named in the permanent pastures contest conducted by Texas A and M Extension Service and East Texas Chamber of Commerce. Clyde Goen of Bryan won the large class in South Central Texas with other first place winners listed. The program highlighted pasture improvement through clearing mowing and sowing better grasses and clovers, aiming to prove East Texas can rival Denmark Holland or New Zealand in pasture quality.

Family relays night tremors felt on Pacific coast

Mrs. Haswell writing from Hollywood California describes back to back earth shocks at 1 15 am 5 am and 9 30 am as Los Angeles suffers more damage than Hollywood while noting autos ride unaware of quakes. Wolf Trip Trapped by Five Points Man on Thursday

Early Thursday October 5 George W Moss of Five Points trapped a yearling wolf weighing 30 pounds two feet tall and four feet long in a steel trap. Moss had warned wolves maraud into his flock and suspected this was the same depredator that killed a kid Saturday. He set more traps, and the wolf was dispatched with a shotgun after being caught by a forefoot. wolves travel in groups, following a regular beat.

City offers free diphtheria immunization at City Hall

Health officials in Bryan arrange free diphtheria immunization for residents unable to pay. Dr. R. Henry Harrison Jr. will administer the vaccine at the city clinic located in City Hall.

Great Tent Show Attracts Hagenbeck-Wallace to Bryan

The Hagenbeck-Wallace circus, one of America's two largest rail shows, performs in Bryan on Saturday Oct 21 at the South Main street grounds. The three all steel train circus features Clyde Beatty with 40 lions and tigers and the Hanneford Family, Billevu troupe, Canestrelly Family, Flying Hills, and 100 other acts. Shows run 2 and 8 pm with doors opening an hour early for the grand zoological display.

Hunting Season Dates Announced by Game Warden

Game Warden David Young releases opening and closing dates for game animals and birds. Squirrel runs October to December while doves split by north and south zones. Ducks and geese share November to January dates with a 12 daily bag limit. Quail runs December 1 to January 14. The H and T C Railroad line marks the zone boundary.

Legionnaires Attend Robertson County Fair in Franklin

American Legion fair committee members H. T. Downard Lang Spell Curtis Gray Albert Goodwin and I Eberstadt traveled to Franklin Thursday to attend the Robertson County Fair. Highlights included Negro church choir performances from Calvert and varied exhibits such as quilts wood carving student displays floral arrangements the Negro section poultry and livestock, plus a wagon fashioned from car rims made with simple tools. The fairgrounds offer ample shade from large oaks and a suitable setting for the event.

Blanton Appointed Secretary for Paris Chamber

R B Blanton, longtime secretary of Hearne Chamber of Commerce for three years, has been chosen to serve as secretary for the Paris Chamber of Commerce. He is a Bryan resident and brother of W N Blanton, secretary and general manager of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce. Blanton plans to begin work in Paris on October 20.

Plan to Improve Dirt Streets of City This Fall

Bryan dirt streets are being surveyed to identify culverts needing repair or replacement to ensure safe traffic. Repairs will be done if possible before graveling, hoped to be funded by federal work relief funds soon. About thirty miles may be grovelled, per City Manager RK G Williams.

Mrs. P. S. Tilson of Houston accepts the Bryan chapter UDC delegate to the general convention in Baltimore Maryland this November. The Bryan chapter will honor her with a December meeting where she will report on the convention to local Daughters of the Confederacy.
