Navasota River Polluted by Oil and Salt Water

Brazos County health officials warn of graves danger from thousands of dead and sick fish in the Navasota river. J Frank Elder of the Texas Game and Fish Protective Association inspected the river and will organize a local chapter at the Chamber of Commerce tonight to pursue charges against oil companies. Citizens urged to avoid consuming river fish and milk from cows using river water.

Drowning Fatality Traced to Car Crash Near Wellborn

Funeral services Sunday in Anderson for Fred McIntyre 34 of Anderson and Houston who drowned Saturday night when his car left the highway just south of Wellborn and pinned him under the submerged vehicle. Passenger Jimmy Brennan escaped unharmed as the car plunged through a bridge rail during a blinded approach. The body was moved from Bryan to Navasota after burial plans.

Kurten Meeting Draws Big Crowd Includes Rotary Guests

A Kurten club meeting on Saturday night drew an estimated three to four hundred attendees. Speakers included Prof. Daniel Russell of Texas A and M College and Arab student Michael Haddad. Rotary members and Kurten residents contributed readings and music as the program concluded with refreshments.

Agriculture Department calls for 12.89 million bales this year

Washington October 9 The Department of Agriculture forecasts this year’s cotton production at 12,885,000 bales. This compares with 12,414,000 bales indicated a month ago and 13,002,000 bales at this time last year.

The Census Bureau reported that ginning before Oct 1 reached 5,851,415 running bales. Texas accounted for 2,291,057 bales and Louisiana for 305,629 bales.

Typhoid Shots Administered at Knob Prairie School

County health officers Dr. R. M. Searcy and nurses Edna Abbott Shelton and Sedalia Wilson vaccinated six people and gave first shots to 43 at the Knob Prairie community school on Monday afternoon before planning to move on to the Smetana community for similar work.

Legion Auxiliary Installs Leaders On Friday Night

American Legion Auxiliary held a Friday evening meeting at the Legion home. Mrs I H Bartz of Brenham served as installing officer. New officers installed: president Anton e Krenek vice president Curtis Gray secretary Jack Johnson treasurer Luke Patranella sergeant at arms Henry Schovassa. Absent were historian J E Stanford and chaplain R H Smith. Outgoing president M M Erskine received an auxiliary pin from A S McSwain. The group, with 30 members and visitors, observed a social hour and refreshments. Two meritorious service citations were announced from state headquarters for a superior unit and from state child welfare headquarters for work in child welfare.

Bank embezzlement trio plead guilty in federal court

Three former First National Bank of Bryan employees pleaded guilty to embezzlement and misappropriation of funds totaling more than 30000 in a federal case. Judge Kennerly deferred sentencing to January 29, noting restitution could influence whether suspended sentences are granted.

Editor of Eagle Attends Dallas Temple Meetings

Mrs. Lee J. Rountree editor of The Eagle traveled to Waco for an overnight visit and to Dallas for Press Day at the State Fair. She returned to Temple for a District 3 B and P W C meeting with Stella Stuart and Belton hosting, including a banquet and Sunday session where Mrs. Rountree spoke.

Marlin Officials Inspect Bryan Power Plant Prospects

Marlin mayor C R Glass and city engineer Levi Goodrich visited Bryan Monday to study the public utility plant and its earnings. They praised Bryan’s municipally owned utilities as a top Southwest example and announced that Marlin residents are considering a similar plant.

Guilty Murder Verdict in Cun ningham Shooting Case

Robert Andrews was found guilty of murder in district court for the fatal shooting of Oscar Cunningham on June 19. The jury set his punishment at six years in state prison.

Service Station Robbed on Parker Avenue

Burglars used a crowbar to force entry at the Serve-U service station on Parker Avenue. The shop, operated by Joe Havil, was robbed Sunday night of fourteen tires and an auto battery. No clue to the culprits was left.

Bryan Men Hart In Accident On Houston Hiway

P H Hensarling and E A Peters were injured when their sedan overturned near Houston on the way to Houston Friday morning. J Tom Smith was unhurt. The truck driver admitted fault after the crash, and all three were treated at Memorial Hospital.

Brazos Club Boys Headed to Dallas State Fair

Luther Wilson of Prospect 4-H and Lonnie Bienski of Leonard 4-H leave for a three day Dallas Fair as guests of the Dallas Fair association. Wilson earns trips on corn cotton and peanuts with net returns of 147.31 from three demonstrations. Bienski starts with Barred Rock eggs and raises 30 chickens for a future purebred flock. Joe Martin Henderson cannot go this year but sends 100 pullets for the egg laying contest and reports 1620 eggs from 100 pullets hatched Feb 28. Albina Severa of Rye 4-H also wins a Dallas trip for corn and peas demonstrations.

A&M College Adds to Brazos County Storm Fund Total

An additional 25 is received from A and M College for the Red Cross fund aiding Texas Rio Grande Valley storm sufferers. The contribution brings Brazos County total to 233.07 after a 208.07 check had already been sent.

Directors discuss focused member renewal and selective recruitment to raise income. A special Membership and Finance committee will be formed with Travis B. Bryan as chair. College Avenue Revival Planned for October

College Avenue Baptist church lays out a two week revival starting October 22 led by Rev. W B Breazeale with preaching duties. An evangelistic singer will come to Bryan to direct the music though the performer is not yet named.

Sportsmen of Bryan organize local Texas Game Fish Protective group

About forty Bryan and College sportsmen met in the chamber of commerce rooms to form a local chapter of the Texas Game and Fish Protective Association. J. Frank Elder assisted, naming KE B. Elliott as president with Marshall Bullock as vice president and C. T. Sprague as secretary treasurer. Nine directors were chosen, with regular meetings set for the first Monday each month.
