The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors approve a monthly Trades Day starting January. The plan aims to attract people from the entire trade area, build goodwill, and position Bryan as the logical marketplace to meet normal merchandise demand, potentially boosting trade next year.
Joe Pletzer Jr spent the weekend in Dallas and returned to Bryan Monday. Mrs. A L Smith of Houston is visiting Bryan with her mother Mrs. E L Godwin and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Shiftlett of Houston visited Bryan for several days and travelled to Marble Falls to see Shiftlett's mother. Mr. and Mrs. M B Easters of Urt en were in Bryan today on a friendly visit.
Mrs. Mary Lee Smith wife of Dr Howard O Smith of Marlin died at a local hospital from a bullet wound to the head. Sheriff M M Reese found a pistol with one discharge at the home. She was a Galveston raised musician and active in Marlin civic life. Survived by husband and son Howard Lee Smith and other relatives. Funeral set for Wednesday at ten in Galveston.
Young people are expected to attend the College Avenue Baptist Sunday School banquet in the department room of the church Thursday evening at 1 30. Mrs John Buchanan associate superintendent leads planning with several committees, tickets go to all department members, and the entertainment is funded from a previously raised fund.
In Monterrey Mexico on November 20 a small rebel group cut international telephone wires and burned two railroad bridges between Lampazos and Rodriguez. General Juan Almazan pursued the rebels, believed to hail from Lampazos, Villarreal's home town. Wires were later repaired and countryside quieted.
Mexico City reported that a Monterrey to Laredo, Texas line was cut by a rebel band. An alleged manifest in a newspaper under General Antonio Villarreal urged an armed uprising on the anniversary of the Madero revolution.
W H Darrow says reports accusing ginners and cotton handlers of organizing a selfish fight against the farmer and the Bankhead act were made by farmers at a conference and not by him. He notes the AAA remains unbiased toward the Bankhead Act and advocates production control tied to demand and a long term farm program.
Dr. Lamar Jones Dr. Webb Buchanan Charles Merka and P EK Dishman returned from a deer-hunt in the Big Bend country near Sanderson Terrell County. The party killed three deer.
Mrs. Frances Barak died Monday at 2 30 PM aged 80 years 11 months 15 days at her son Frank Barak's home two miles east of Bryan near the new airport. Funeral rites were held Tuesday at 9 30 AM at the Barak home and 10 AM at St Joseph's Church Bryan with Rt Rev J B Gleissner. Interment Mount Cavalry cemetery. Born December 4 1853 in Czecho Slovakia she came to America in 1902 settling Brazos County. Survived by son Frank Barak daughters Mrs Fanny Vavara and Mrs Rudolph Luza and Mrs Rudolph Pichoda 20 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren.
The annual Red Cross drive started Monday in Brazos county with strong responses. Citizens are invited to join and donate. A and M College fund given to the Community Chest means no campus drive. Local committees led by Mrs. J. B. Priddy and Mrs. R. W. Persons canvass Bryan business areas as the roll call runs through November 29 1935.
A tornado five miles northwest of Mount Pleasant last night swept a 100 yard wide by two mile long area, demolishing several houses and injuring C. W. Clark and Bender Perkins who occupied the wrecked home.
B H Thibodeaux of the AAA College Station spoke to Bryan Lions Club on cotton industry income in 1931 32 through 1934 noting average farmer incomes rising from about 266 in 1931 to 441 in 1934 while the half hand farmer earned roughly 75. McAlester Oklahoma November 20 two convicts were shot and perhaps fatally wounded during a heavy rain break from the state penitentiary. Three others were recaptured. The wounded were Melvin Gatlin life term for robbery Comanche County and Bill Anderson seven years for burglary Pontotoc County.
Harvey home demonstration club members elected new officers at the Harvey school. Officers named: Mrs. Sam Pate president, Mrs. Ira Kelley vice president, Mrs. W. C. Raines reporter, Mrs. Cecil Kelley recreational leader, Mrs. Noah Cole secretary, and Mrs. E. A. Peters council delegate. Mrs. Darrow announced the Federation Christmas party will be December 13 at the Municipal Club at 2 o'clock with a best attendance prize. Refreshments were served to members and visitors.
The Bryan congregation sets Sunday November 25 as Appreciation Day for Mr and Mrs H P Black before they move December 1 to Houston. They have served six years, uplifting the Sunday School BYPU choir and church activities, as H P Black becomes assistant pastor at Second Baptist Church in Houston.
Derelict heads of relief families who spend cash grants for liquor or gambling will receive only in kind aid after completing a weekly budget. The policy, announced by Adam R. Johnson, state relief director, applies to Austin and statewide relief efforts.
Bloodhounds from Gatesville head to Waco area to track suspects Joe Averett and Toy Curry in the murder of Malcolm Stewart. Sheriff A B Mobley says the duo may hide in brush near Hubbard and riders are assembling at Hubbard to trail through mud. Curry was reportedly seen near Hubbard in a farmer’s barn before escaping.
Canyon Texas November 20 college news says freshmen at West Texas State Teachers Collegeaverage weight 121 pounds up from 118 last year while average height remains about 63.7 inches, indicating weight gain not height.
Horace Reed reports from San Benito that he killed two turkeys on a deer hunt but did not see any deer. He expects to return home in a day or two with some venison, accompanied by Mrs. Reed and their young son.
Walton, president of the Association of Land Grant Colleges and Universities, told a capital talk the United States is losing foreign outlets for cotton under the farm program reducing production. He cited drops in export sales and warned that restricting production to domestic use could harm the industry’s broader interests. He urged a return to near normal cotton production for economic recovery.
J. E. Stanford of the Texas Relief Commission announced a statewide rural rehabilitation meeting set for Dallas on November 26 and 27. About 100 rural and home supervisors are expected, along with officials from Washington and the state relief headquarters.
J L Edge has been elected president of the Free Will Baptists of Tex at their convention held recently at Wa co. He was also appointed as a member of the executive board.

Temperatures rose through the week in Bryan with a low of 48 degrees Monday and a high of 84 Sunday. Rainfall totaled 0.12 inches with 0.02 on Friday and 0.10 on Sunday.
Austin reports sewing rooms under the Texas Relief Commission will begin making 168000 comforters for needy families. Director A C Allen says 1225000 yards of comforter covering have already been delivered to sewing rooms across the state.
Plans to improve the first Monday monthly Trade Days were approved by the Trade Extension committee on Tuesday morning with the Jan 7 1935 kickoff set. The Santa Claus parade is slated for Dec 14 with expected publicity and crowd. A Farmers Market upgrade estimated at 400 dollars includes flooring screening doors and sanitary improvements. Burleson county road grading from Highway 21 to Carrs store area will be pursued. Deed delivered and site costs for the division highway office building turned over to the Highway Commission. Directors present included Brown Caldwell Canady Casey Coulter Edge Maniloff McQuillen Parker Russell Todd Varisco Yeager.
The largest consignment of potatoes ever to move through Port Houston will arrive tomorrow from Maine aboard the steamer Malton. The shipment supports relief efforts and marks a historic cargo record for the port.
New Dixie theater launches Saturday at 8 p.m. with Gift of Gab starring Edmund Lowe and Gloria Stuart. J A Jeffries of Orange says the RCA High Fidelity equipped venue offers new furnishings and will run daily matinee and evening shows. The New Dixie is part of an independent chain under Lee Threet of Longview with Lufkin and Jacksonville locations already operating.
