War taxes start in November with broad new levies

Washington reports the new war taxes take effect midnight tonight with a wide range of levies. Amusement admission one cent per ten cents. three percent on fright transportation. eight percent on passenger fares. ten percent on Pullman accommodations. taxes on tobacco products and cigars. and a host of other charges on mail, telegraph, and insurance. First class mail rates rise to three cents and post cards to four cents, with foreign mail extended.

Pink worm found in Jefferson and surrounding counties

Patrol Boat Alcedo Sunk by German Submarine

The American patrol boat Alcedo was torpedoed and sunk in the war zone early Monday. One officer and twenty enlisted men are missing, with the ship sinking in four minutes after the hit. The Alcedo carried seven officers and eighty five men. no Texas crew members are listed among the missing.

Taubenhaus in Waco for railroads fellowship plan

Dr. J. J. Taubenhaus of the Texas agricultural experiment station attends a joint Southwestern Claim Prevention group meeting in Waco. The goal is to urge railroad general managers to fund one or two industrial fellowships to study preventing rot in perishables in transit with an annual $5,000 appropriation for two pathologists working with Taubenhaus. The plan has prior support from the association.

Petrograd Government Orders Prosecution of Military Committee

The government will not use armed force against the soldiers and workers delegates but will prosecute its members. Military authorities would act if a revolt occurs. The revolutionary committee demanded control over all general staff orders in the Petrograd district, which was refused. The committee then directed the military and invited troops to observe only committee orders, and authorities broke relations with the committee. Bridges between workers quarters and the city center were cut.
