Mr. and Mrs. O. Ryan of Bryan announce the birth of a daughter Sunday morning at St Joseph's hospital. Mr. and Mrs. John G. Fouts of Galveston visited Bryan friends this weekend and returned home. Mrs. C. W. Simmons and her mother Mrs. M. Cain are now living with her daughter in Bryan. Mrs. W. Hi. Andrew returned from Dallas after a weekend visit.
Sit down strikes widen across Eastern and Gulf ports as marine workers walk out during a coast wide hearing in San Francisco. In Houston and Port Arthur longshoremen face picket lines while tankers and cargo ships move under patrols from Port Arthur Seamen’s Union with Galveston joining the action.
Miss Sarah Katherine Lawless aged 73 died Saturday night at a Bryan hospital from double pneumonia after brief illness. Born February 20 1863 in Brazos county she was a pioneer resident and long a helper to neighbors. Funeral 2 pm today at old Tryon Baptist church Rev E S Phinney officiating with McCulloch Dansby Co in charge. Survived by brother Jack Lawless of Kurten and many Kurten friends.
Ursula Estill wed R L Alexander of San Saba in Fort Worth Saturday evening. Alexander works in a government program and has been stationed at San Saba before transferring to Fort Worth offices. the couple will reside in Fort Worth.
Democrats of Bryan and Brazos County announce a final pre election rally at 8 tonight weather permitting on the corner of Main and 26th streets or in the district courtroom if needed Speakers include Judge W C Davis W S Barron and F L Henderson Others expected to speak and rally focus on national campaign issues Texas constitutional amendments and the importance of a strong Roosevelt Garner ticket to secure Texas support and its voice at the 1940 Democratic Convention
A chill wind moved into Texas with sub freezing temperatures for the Panhandle and forecasts calling for the cold spell to spread across most of the state tomorrow. Livestock warnings were issued for northern West Texas.
President Roosevelt will deliver his final pre election radio address tonight at 10 o clock CST. He will urge national support at the polls on Tuesday. National Chairman James A. Farley will follow with his last address to voters before polls open Tuesday morning.
Officials at British Asiatic naval headquarters report three British sailors from Keelung were detained for nonpayment of a taxi fare and beaten to coerce confessions. A British officer was removed when interceding. A fountain pen was reportedly jammed under a sailor’s nails. Britain says the fare was paid and naval forces postponed a Japan visit.
A Mexican woman named Eleanor Alvarado of College Station was knocked down by a passing car driven by G. T. Boyd of College Station around 7:30 on a misty rainy night. She was taken to St. Josephs Hospital with bruises and cuts but no broken bones. The driver stated he did not see her until informed of the collision and she is recovering well.
East region reports cloudy skies with thundershowers and a cold wave in the northeast. The west is partly cloudy with colder conditions and a northward cold wave.
Dr. P. A. Woodard formerly of Texas Medical College Galveston joins Dr. S. C. Richardson in Bryan. The pair occupy two rooms in City National Bank building to form a new internal medicine lab focusing on diagnosis allergy and hay fever. Dr. Woodard and his wife and daughter relocate to East 34th Street in Bryan.
Texas A and M College will confer an honorary L L D degree on Jesse Jones RFC chairman on November 5. Jones becomes the second person to receive the honor in the college's 61 years F. M. Law will invest the hood. About 600 guests including Roosevelt and Garner invited to the 2 p.m. ceremony.
Voters in Bryan will start at 8 A M and close at 7 P M for the presidential election. Polling places are the Library, Courthouse, and Fire Station with lists of workers named for each site. The ballot is long, listing presidential electors and offices from United States senator to local posts, and early turnout is urged to reduce tally time.
Insurgent warplanes made the eighteenth raid on Madrid outskirts killing three children and wounding eight adults in Vallecas. The capital was spared as the planes turned back toward suburbs. Government troops evacuated Getafe and reinforced lines while Brunete fell after other towns were seized. Fascists closed to within nine miles of Madrid at Fuenlabrida. Military authorities warned the capital’s fate hour had arrived.

Austin nov 2 definite indication this week of reappointment by the Texas State Board of Control of Orville S Carpenter as executive director of the Texas Old Age Assistance Commission. The Social Security Board in Washington favors his reappointment and the new HB 8 pension law places administration under the Board of Control. The law caps the rolls at 70 000 to 80 000 and ends property cash and income restrictions. The Board says no personnel shake up is planned and merit system ratings will continue under the new administration.
Gov. Landon said the Madison Square Garden speech implies the return of NRA AAA and other programs. He stated the address did not answer specific questions but the inference was plain and the president seeks to be master of business.
J R McCrary of Calvert and head of the Texas Cooperative Council and Brazos Valley Cotton Cooperative Association calls for amendments to curb representation from large counties and raise governor and other state officer salaries. He also urges a strong vote for presidential electors to preserve Texas influence at the national Democratic convention.
Miss Estelle Rogers of Galveston, a talented poet and artist, spent a weekend at Texas A and M College to write a feature on the school from a feminine angle. She attended the Aggies vs Arkansas game, illustrated with her pen and ink, and has contributed poetry and prose to the Galveston News.
