Heavy smoke from a forest fire in the Everglades drifts over Miami as flames creep eastward along a 20 mile front. The blaze has destroyed about 100 square miles of soft forest since Saturday.
Miss Margaret Wilson daughter of Woodrow Wilson has taken a job selling bonds to cover a $10,000 debt from an oil stock investment. The move follows a court battle over a judgment obtained in February and shields her from a financial examination in court.
Tenacious opposition in the Texas Senate stalled Wood administration effort to create a nine member state board of higher education with sweeping authority. The bill passed to engrossment 17 to 7, with amendments to limit powers and age and residence requirements for appointees.

Charles Lindbergh was hailed as The Ambassador of America in the French Chamber of Deputies. Ambassador Herrick introduced the aviator who received a tremendous ovation from the crowded chamber and won the Deputies over with a brief address.
Dr. F J Gilson 74 prominent Calvert physician died at his home at 8 00 p m He had served as city alderman board of education health officer and railroad agent He was active in the Presbyterian church Sunday school superintendent and elder Survived by widow son Maury Gilson of Calvert daughter Mrs Olin Furlock of Dallas and two sisters Mrs Eugenia Wren of Austin and Mrs Seth Burnitt of Calvert
Mrs. F. L. Thomas and L. G. Jones of College lead a Red Cross Relief Fund clothing drive for flood victims. Cars will visit A and M College homes tomorrow morning to pick up clothing underwear bedding and similar items. residents are asked to place contributions on porches for quick collection.
Milton Merka about 10 years old and Frank Merka Jr. were in a collision near the Washington avenue East 24th street crossing while returning from Bryan. Milton suffered a deep cut above his eye and facial bruising. Frank had minor injuries. The other driver, a woman, fainted but recovered after a Bryan doctor treated her.
Beloit Wis May 25 two weeks suspension for smoking was imposed today against three Beloit College co-eds all of whom are active in college affairs.
American Federation of Labor leader William Green said the AFL will push federal and state laws to curb abuse of injunctions against labor in Congress and state legislatures. He spoke today before New York bankers.
Mrs. Josie Lawrence entertains three visiting nieces from Dallas Miss Jessie Kate Lyons Mrs William H Marek and Mrs J L Mayfield who reside with her during the visit. Friends extend cordial welcome as Sammie Frances and Jessie Kate Lyons stay in the city.
The resolutions committee at the Texas State Federation of Labor convention in Wichita Falls discussed eight or nine resolutions. A proposed measure endorses Governor Moody's penitentiary reorganization plan and supports plenary powers for the new prison board. The committee was urged to advocate a hands off policy by the legislature.
Dr C A Searcy was elected Worshipful Master of Brazos Union Lodge A F and A M No 129 for 1927 28 at a Monday meeting. Officers chosen include J W Payne as Senior Warden J W Hall as Secretary and E W Crenshaw as Treasurer. Searcy brings prior leadership from Hempstead Lodge and is part of a prominent Masonic family in the district.
David H. Teal confessed to robbing the Dinkins post office of parcel post mail containing dry goods on the night of May 17 before Inspector H. M. Hagney in Houston and is jailed in Brazos county. He used an iron rod to prise the lock, with goods valued at about $25.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce and Allen Academy announce a 11 day goodwill tour starting May 30 sponsored by Rotary Lions and Pastors Association clubs. The Allen Academy band will tour Texas and perform in Miami at Lions convention after an itinerary covering Hearne to Bryan with multiple Texas cities on successive days.
Captain Charles Lindbergh, in Paris after a New York flight, spends an hour inspecting and repairing the Spirit of St. Louis with French mechanics. He fits parts and tests adjustments, ignoring the celebrations around him to focus on the Lone Eagle.
In New Orleans on May 25 Associated Press reports residents of the Sugar Bowl area remain undaunted as floodwaters advance. About 100 left homes but many stay put, relying on past flood experience. Over 60 square miles in Coupee Parish near the Atchafalaya River are submerged, with floodwater breaching a levee gap at McCrea.
Miss Lucile Robinson of Hempstead arrived today for a visit with Mrs. Lou Robinson and Mrs. Josie Sheets on West 26th street. She came to attend the marriage of her friend Miss Bess Spence to Mr. Ed Brewster at their home.

The Criminal Appeals court affirmed the death sentence for Pete Banks of Fayette county, convicted of murder in the May 8 1926 slaying of C P Jones. The Associated Press report from Austin notes the ruling today.
Paul Kelly convicted of manslaughter for killing Ray Raymond at Raymond's Hollywood home. Raymond was husband of Dorothy Mackaye. Sentence ranges from one to ten years.
Harry McClennan age 41 confessed to killing his mother Mrs. Nancy Garnell age 60 with a hammer and burying the body on a nearby farm. The remains were found last Monday, authorities said.
The Queen Contest by the local Fire Department draws Bryan Co Eds to vie for Queen while supporting the San Antonio trip. Tickets at 50 cents adults and 25 cents children include votes, with extra votes sold at 1 cent each. Voting updates appear daily in The Eagle and on the Queen Theatre screen.
