U S Soldier Killed by Mexican Guard

An American soldier crossing the boundary east of Juarez was shot and killed by a Mexican customs guard. General Gavira claimed the American was intoxicated and fired first. Other dispatches note the Carranza garrison moving south along the American line and Company A engineers ordered to prepare for possible border service.

Wilson to Speak for Peace League Next Week

President Wilson has accepted an invitation to address the League to Enforce Peace, led by former President Taft, on Friday or Saturday of next week. He discussed a postwar world where nations unite to uphold peace with a common policy of force. Representatives of the women’s peace party urged him to call a conference of neutral nations to end the war, noting the 1899 Hague conference as a precedent.

Commencement Sermon at Bryan Academy Hearers

The Bryan Baptist Academy 1915 16 began with a commencement sermon at First Baptist Church by Dr. T C Mahan of Huntsville. The rain kept many away but those who attended praised the sermon highlighting the perfect law of liberty and Christian service. An evening missionary sermon followed with John 15 14 as text urging global mission.

Germany Urges Raising Rabbits For Leather and Fat

The Prussian ministry urges agricultural groups to breed tame rabbits to supply skins and fat as oils and fats become scarce after the war. A Berlin company already collects bunny skins and rabbits can be fed on scraps. The appeal notes rabbits require little food and aid from scraps that would otherwise go to waste.

Washington on May 18 the house naval committee voted to abandon the five year building program recommended by Secretary Daniels and instead build five battle cruisers no dreadnoughts and about twenty five submarines.

Dog Attacks Child. Neighbors Kill Suspect Rabies Dog

William Henry Walker Jr., 2, was bitten on a finger by a small dog while playing in the front yard. Neighbors killed the dog and sent its head to the Pasteur Institute in Austin for rabies testing. The dog, which had been in the neighborhood, appeared strange and neighbors fear possible rabies or poisoning. If rabies signs appear, the child will be taken to Austin immediately after test results arrive.

Australian metal industry reorganized to curb foreign control

Melbourne May 22. Hugh Mahon acting attorney general announces a cooperative shift in Australia’s metals sector. The Associated Smelters Proprietary Ltd will smelt refine and realise silver lead and gold ores. An Australian Zinc Producers Association unites major zinc firms to sell all marketable ore for 50 years. Mahon says workers and organizers dissociate from current labor government and German influence remains in London financial circles.

The State of Texas Brazos County Sheriff announces a sale by order of the Brazos County District Court on the 6th day of May 1916 at Bryan to satisfy a judgment for Mrs Josie Sheets against multiple defendants including Mrs M B Alexander W A Alexander and Rotan Grace Company. Property described as Lots 6 and 7 Block 44 in Bryan. Judged amount 552.75 with 10 percent interest from March 30 1916 plus costs. Sheriff T C Nunn notes the sale under legal authority.
