Statewide liquor law to supersede zone law in Texas

Austin May 16 The statutory prohibition law set to take effect June 26 will supersede the zone law if the appeals court knocks out or upholds the latter The statewide act will govern regardless The act permits shipment of liquor into prohibited territory for scientific purposes allows personal use carry into prohibition areas and may allow liquor shipments into the state for manufacturing purposes Manufacturing plants in Texas have been hard hit and the attorney general's department has received many inquiries for rulings on this point.

Secretary Baker announces that all successful students in the fourth officers training camps will be eligible for commissions instead of only 50 per cent as heretofore. The notice reflects wartime officer selection policy.

Local board to handle registration of the young men

Major Townes reports the exemption board's confirmation that men who turned 21 since June 5 last year must register on June 5 this year. Brazos County residents register with the local board in this office where space is available for about 200 registrants. Texas estimates total around 40,000. county and city attorneys to assist. Details are brief, but expect similar procedure as last year pending presidential proclamation.

Regular Army Enlistments Open for All Branches

Captain Will Howe announces that after registration men are not eligible for regular army enlistment and all branches including cavalry, field artillery, coast artillery, signal, infantry and medical are open. Enlistees head to France as transports are available. June 5 deadline looms for those who wish to enlist before draft boards act. Postmasters can arrange transport, with two days needed for ticket delivery.

Death of R W Worthington in this City

R W Worthington born March 13 1880 in Burleson county died here this morning at 3 12 after grippe and pneumonia. He lived mainly in Brazos county on Senator J R Astin’s place near Mumford. Survived by wife five children parents Mr and Mrs T W Worthington sister Mrs Albert May Bryan brother Dave Worthington in U S Navy Norfolk VA. Funeral at sister’s home then Wellborn cemetery conducted by Dr E W Solomon.

Liberty County Pays Sapp Case Jury and Jail Feeding Bill

Liberty County commissioners review sheriff feeding bills related to the E. E. Sapp case now transferred to Liberty. Jury service totals 853 dollars and feeding two Sapp brothers 57.50 dollars. They also verify city and county school funds vouchers as correct and consider a 12,000 dollars per mile assessment for the International and Great Northern railway, urged by W. L. Holder, with a March 29 letter from Director General McAdoo.

A registrar report shows 17 foreign students from Brazil to Spanish Honduras and 51 from 16 states outside Texas. McLennan County leads Texas counties with 58 students, while Dallas and Harris counties report 33 and 45 respectively.
