W Roy Christian Corsicana Chamber of Commerce manager writes from Corsicana praising Bryan residents for courtesy and their role in the Bryan community. He extends cordial regards and thanks to Editor Mrs Lee J Rountree for the visit and hospitality.
Mrs E G Jenkins and daughter Elizabeth of Nacogdoches were convention visitors and guests in the Jenkins home with Mrs Jenkins' auto trip alongside Guy Blount. Ernst Japhet and Paul Wipprecht of Houston joined Elsbeth Wipprecht at her home as convention visitors. Mrs Milton W Sims Jr of Bryan sails to England with her husband and daughter Patti. Mrs Laura Kestler and Valleigh Kestler of Waco attend funeral of Miss Lillian Buchanan in Kurton. Christine Kellett and Ethel Forrest of Midway visit Sam Houston students in Huntsville.
Lillian Louise Buchanan died at 9 16 AM in a local hospital after weeks of illness. Born February 12 1909 in Kurten she was 20. She studied at State Teachers College Huntsville and Bryan schools and was a member of Kurten Baptist church and Rainbow for Girls. She is survived by parents, a sister Marguerite and two brothers. Funeral at Kurten Baptist church Thursday at 10 AM with burial at Kurten cemetery.
Special weather note from The Eagle reports tonight’s thunder storms for Bryan and vicinity with Thursday showers. East Texas faces thunder storms tonight and cooler Thursday in the north portion while West Texas experiences cloudy conditions tonight and Thursday.
Three men were beaten and shot on a road near Wolfe Lake in Hammond Indiana. Two bodies lay in the back seat of a coupe and a third nearby. Identified victims include John Scalisi and Albert Anselmi, associates of Scarface Capone, with Scalisi recently freed on bond before his trial for the St Valentine’s Day massacre.
County and city police officials reported no arrests during the convention. Sheriff J H Reed said the jail remained empty, and Chief of Police Martin and District Judge W C Davis praised the orderly crowd. Bryan and College gained favorable publicity, with Houston officers appreciating the hospitality and traffic control.
J. E. Stanford, retiring agricultural director for the East Texas Chamber of Commerce, will establish a Texas office in Bryan after June 1 for the Southern Agriculturist. He received a case of table silverware from East Texas associates in closing convention moments Tuesday.
Fellow workers in the East Texas Chamber of Commerce presented Mr. Stanford with a case of silverware as a tribute to his years of service. The gesture was offered in appreciation of his abilities and personal esteem, effective June 1.
The East Texas Chamber of Commerce convention generated extensive publicity for Bryan and its institutions, including Texas A and M College. About 800 newspaper columns, 40,000 words via news services, and thousands more by long distance calls were reported. Photographers covered convention features, and major news reels carried footage. Represented newspapers included dailies from Dallas Houston Port Arthur Waco Beaumont Fort Worth Marshall Tyler plus others. Major news services AP UP and INS were represented.
The great seal of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce shone in a large reproduction in the Eugene Edge store window during the three day East convention. Cody A. Greer designed and built the display following the original in detail with green and white bulbs flashing regularly. The lighting drew wide attention from convention visitors and locals.
In Austin on May 8 the House approved a measure rewarding good behavior by shaving days from sentences and allowing mailings of poll tax receipts. A senator from Greenville also saw a bill create a new civil appeals court pass the Senate 16 to 9, though vetoed by Governor Moody between sessions.
The rural church conference at Texas A and M College opens in the Y M C A chapel with Dean C H Winkler in charge. Dr V P Lee speaks on rural church and economic problems while Mrs Maggie W Barry covers boys and girls club work. Denominational meetings, demonstrations in poultry and grafting, and a Sbisa Hall luncheon follow.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce will retain the silver loving cup for 12 months after George Strickland of Bryan won the convention golf tournament. Next year at Port Arthur the cup will again be offered to the winner’s chamber. The event closed Tuesday with final scores led by Strickland gross 80 net 71 followed by Fouraker 76 Lundin 73 Gassett 76 Gallagher 78 Bonner 72 Porter 79 Riesto 70 Stein 69 Pierce 71 Lapan 71 Harter 83 Sebesta 83 Bryan 86 Park 73 Kern 77 Leigh 78 Lush 81.
The Christian and Mission Alliance reports from Sungtao China that Rev. R. Schwendener of Chicago has been kidnapped by bandits. The message reached New York on May 8.
AUSTIN May 8 The death sentence for Marshall Ratliff convict ed of murder in the December 1927 Cisco First National Bank robbery was affirmed by the court of criminal appeals today.
The body of Ivan Houston an air mail pilot from Denver on the Denver Cheyenne route was found in his plane wreckage ten miles south of Cheyenne. He had been missing since last night after failing to land due to fog over the local air field.
Ford coupe found abandoned in a swamp about seven miles from Westfield is linked to the double murder of Olena Wuenche of Spring and Edward Stone of Westfield. Police compare tire tracks and pursue a former suitor theory while a Houston youth provides alibi and timeline. Funeral services for Wuenche and Stone were held in Spring and Westfield.
The Bryan Building and Loan Association page ad in the Etex convention issue of the Bryan Eagle left out director J. E. Bagley. Bagley devotes time to the association and conducts property inspections for loan seekers.
The cotton market closed weaker with futures down 4 to 6 points and local spot prices quoted at 17.25 to 17.75 cents.
In Rochester Indiana on May 8 Lloyd Flitcraft 36 a farmer and his three daughters died in a house fire believed sparked by a lantern. Flitcraft rescued his wife and two other children and an elderly relative before reentering the burning home on a stairway as the upper floor collapsed.
Texas Agricultural Experiment Station division reports boll weevil activity in several counties. Brazoria 11 percent with adults, Cameron 4000 acres heavily infested with garden webworms, Fort Bend 4 percent with weevils near Simonton and Sugarland, Hidalgo 55 percent with flea hopper damage, Matagorda 2 percent weevils in open prairie land.
Burt Mayfield was convicted of the July 1928 slaying of Ruby Osborne at Goldwaithe during the Mills county fair. He received a five year prison term.

Frank Williams financier is found dead by a self-inflicted bullet at a residence in Los Angeles after a dispute with Peggy Troxel 18 who is hospitalized severely wounded. Williams had been divorced from his wife and was infatuated with Miss Troxel, says attorney Neil Ames.
William Forrest a Midway high school senior won first in the My Home Town speech contest staged by the East Texas Chamber of Commerce. He had never spoken publicly before six weeks earlier when selected to deliver the curtain speech for a home talent play. He later won the district contest at Huntsville before coming to Bryan.
Martin Maloney papal marquis, leading Catholic layman, capitalist and philanthropist, died in Philadelphia at 81. He was among the church's foremost American supporters and figures.
Oscar B. Colquitt of Texas was approved unanimously by the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee to join the railroad mediation board. A former Texas governor, he would fill the seat vacated by Pat M. Neff, following Neff’s retirement and Coolidge’s renomination.
Replicas of the A and M College of Texas service flag hung in Guion Hall were presented to the Texas Senate and House of Representatives by President T O Walton during a Tuesday dinner for legislators at the college in College Station. Lt Governor Barry Miller and Speaker W S Barron accepted the flags and said they would hang them in the Capitol halls.
Brazos county earned one of three prizes for best exhibits at the industrial exhibition as Golden Rule Poultry Farm took third place and $20 for a poultry and eggs display arranged by Victor Boriskie owner and manager. First went to Trinity county exhibit and second to Texas Refining Company of Greenville. H. C. Fulgham oversaw the show after initial plans to skip it were dropped.
