Registration Cards for 7th Year Olds to Be Issued

A Texas exemption board informs Major John C. Townes that blank registration forms and printed matter for men reaching age will be issued soon. The card design changes include blue printing for distinction, with old forms used until supplies exhaust. Brazos county is estimated to have about 220 registrants pending final congressional action on the law.

Five Men Leave Friday for Army Mechanics Training

Houston Friday in response to a department call lists five men Gus B Bukowski James H Stephens Elmore Stephenson Louis Fridel and Edward Dugat. Bukowski will join in Austin Dugat reported at Beeville exemption board volunteering as painter not yet accepted. Calls issued May 6 for two men for army mechanics school to report May 8.

Carll Announces for Commissioner

The Eagle announces BE. D. Carll as a Democratic candidate for precinct No. 1 commissioner subject to the July 27 primary. It notes this is his first political bid, his Texan roots, 20 years in the county, and his success as a farmer and stock raiser.

War Price Pressures Raise School House Bid Totals

Only two bids for the high school construction were opened. The lowest base bid plus plumbing, wiring and architect fees would total about 110000, while the bond issue provides 90000. Architect M L Waller will review bids and plans to see if a satisfactory building can be built within appropriation. War prices for labor and materials caused the shortfall.

Captain M. C. Funston Leads Signal Corps School At A and M

Captain M C Funston is promoted from first lieutenant to captain and commands the signal corps service company school for radio mechanics at A and M college. He has 20 years in the service with campaigns in Cuba the Philippines Alaska and Panama. The school will receive a Dodge car and three Ford trucks from Fort Sam Houston today to aid the radio mechanics program.

German farmer forced to buy liberty bonds in Eagle Lake

Eagle Lake reports the Home Guards coerced a wealthy German farmer to invest $2000 in liberty bonds after his son protested. A crowd gathered and the man was whipped with a rope and forced to kiss the flag. The liberty loan flag raising was postponed due to heavy rain.

Australian forces advanced 500 yards along a 600 yard front near Sailly Le Sec east of Amiens and pushed back Germans 300 yards on a 500 yard front west of Morlancourt despite a heavy barrage. British troops maintained the overall pressure in the area.

Captain Hall Reported Missing in Air Battle

Report from American Headquarters in France dated May 8 says Captain James Hall, famed French and American flier, is missing after a battle near Toul. He and two other Americans fought four Germans. The army mourns his loss and wonders if he was killed or could land safely after the fight over Pagny Sur Moselle. Private Troy Forest of Mammoth Springs Arkansas is listed killed in action. British Advances and Artillery Fire Reported on Front

The war office said successful minor operations last night pushed British lines a short distance in the Amiens sector between the Somme and Ancre rivers. Early today increased hostile artillery fire occurred on the Flanders front between Beteren and Kemmel.

Captain Sims to Leave for Medical Training and War

Captain B U Sims resigns as city commissioner to join the medical corps. He will depart for Rochester Minnesota for brief training, then report to Rockford Alabama for base hospital duty.
