Cost of living up seven percent in early 1920

Boston April 28 average cost of living for American wage earners rose seven percent between November 1919 and March 1920, the National Industrial Conference Board reported. The rise totals ninety four and eight tenths percent since July 1914 and twenty one percent in the past year.

Free for all fight at Mount Pleasant primary

Mrs. Jonathan Russell of Mount Pleasant Texas died of injuries after a free-for-all fight at the precinct convention. Nearly a dozen men were injured as Bailey and anti Bailey factions clashed after the convention. Cuspidors knives and canes were used amid heated political tensions with no arrests yet reported.

White Lightning whiskey still found near Texarkana

Sheriff G A Richardson located a long sought whiskey still near Texarkana Arkansas in thick brush. 500 gallons of corn mash a 50 gallon copper kettle coil pipe and other equipment were seized marking the most elaborate operation found in the area. The White Lightning brand is known across the county and tied to East Texas land reputed to yield forty gallons per acre.

Bluebeard Harvey Pleads Guilty to Murder in Los Angeles

Arch-murderer known as Bluebeard Harvey pleaded guilty in a Los Angeles superior court to the murder of Nina Lee Delaney. He faces a first degree murder charge carrying possible death, with sentencing scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. Judge Willis will impose the sentence. Harvey stood at the rail as the indictment was read.
